SALISBURY – Historic Salisbury Foundation will host its first annual Sacred Places Tour, featuring seven historic churches and two cemeteries of Rowan County on Saturday March 29th, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Preceding the tour, Susan Waller will present a brief talk about how churches have brought citizens of Rowan County together. This discussion will take place at 9:15 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Salisbury (217 S Church Street). Many Rowan County natives have fond memories of her tours at Horizons Unlimited, Setzer School, Thyatira Presbyterian Church, the Old Stone House, Kerr Mill, and Organ Lutheran Church.
The 2014 Sacred Places Tour will feature historic churches along Highway 150 (Mooresville Road), into western Rowan County.
The tour will give visitors a view of the physical space as well as the stories of those who have played a role in the development of each church. All churches and cemeteries on the tour will be open for visitors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Docents will be present to answer questions and provide more information at each church.
The 2014 Sacred Places Tour supports Historic Salisbury Foundation’s mission of historic education and preservation throughout the Rowan County. By highlighting churches, the HSF will acquaint the public each church’s rich history and the contributions religious institutions have made in the development of our communities.
Tours in future years will take different routes throughout the county in order to highlight the social, economic, and architectural impact various houses of worship have made.
Tickets are $15 per person. Tickets ordered online or by phone will be held under your name at ‘will call’ located at First United Methodist Church. Day of Tickets will be sold at First United Methodist Church and Thyatira Presbyterian Church.
