Local students excel in science fairs

A number of local students competed in science fairs this year, including many who made it to regional and state competitions.

Three students won honors at the statewide competition held in March at Meredith College in Raleigh.

Kerry Campion, a student at Knox Middle School, won second place for technology and engineering for her project, “Swell no more.” She was also awarded Grand Broadcom Masters and won for technology and engineering on the regional level.

Natalie Lusk presented “How’s the water, Daphnia?” and won elementary honorable mention. She attends Overton Elementary.

Salisbury Academy student Patrick Smith’s project, “Earth/Enviro,” won an award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In addition to Campion, Lusk and Smith, Anthony Vaccaro and Jason Matthews took home awards on the regional level and competed on the state level.

Vaccaro, a student at Knollwood Elementary presented, “Caffeine Through the Ages” and Matthews, who attends Sacred Heart Catholic School, presented “Bio B: 1).”

The local and regional science fair took place at Horizon’s Unlimited, the Rowan-Salisbury School System’s science supplemental center. Horizons Unlimited serves students in both Davie and Rowan counties.

The following students advanced to the regional competition:

Andre Anukwuem, Isenburg Elementary; Morgan Creason and a team comprised of Blair Cooper, Megan Daniels and Lexy Walters, Woodleaf Elementary; Gracie Sprinkle, Preston Whicker and Alex Holshouser, Morgan Elementary; Bryson Shive and Isabella Basinger, Shive Elementary; Jordan Cline, Andrew Beaver, Salem Fleming, Coralie Jones and a team comprised of Grace Gilley, Carys Roberson, Bostian Elementary; Natalie Lusk, Chase Bivens a team made of Alex Blumenthal and Phoebe Hollingsworth, another team comprised of Ellison Frick and Emily Frick and a third team including Bennett Clark and Steven Lescoe, Overton Elementary; Caroline Barbee, Enochville Elementary; Olivia Vinson and Adriana Mullis, Millbridge Elementary; Anthony Vaccaro and Ryland Anderson, Knollwood Elementary; a team made of Trexler Cloninger, Nick Klein and Harrison Doby, Southeast Middle; Kerry Campion, David Holden, Simon Post, Callie Kirchin and a team made of Roarke Burton and Blake Clark, Knox Middle; Kennedy Kirkman, Corriher-Lipe Middle; Patrick Smith, Salisbury Academy; and Jason Matthews, Sacred Heart Catholic School.
