Juan Garcia had three hits and six RBIs as West Rowan pounded Hickory Ridge 14-1 in SPC baseball on Thursday.
Omar Bautista pitched all five innings in the road win. Bautista struck out six.
Hunter Bernhardt had two hits for the Falcons, who enjoyed a nine-run third inning.
West (12-8, 9-6) is fifth in the SPC but could tie for fourth if it wins at home against Hickory Ridge tonight while Carson beats Cox Mill in China Grove.
• South Rowan plays at East Rowan tonight in a matchup that will decide first place in the SPC regular season. East wins an outright title if it beats South. South and Carson trail East by one game.
• Cox Mill will host the SPC tourney semifinals and championship next week.
• A.L. Brown built a 6-0 lead early and beat Hopewell 12-5 in MECKA action on Thursday.
Trace Hagler retired 12 of the first 15 batters for the Titans. Casey Ritchie, Geoffrey Jarvis, Kameron Sherrill and Josh Endicott hda key hits as the Wonders pulled away.
• The Greater Cabarrus Homeschool Stallions won 8-0 against Triad Home School. Hunter Shepherd, Josh Holt and Sawyer Stickland had two hits each. Shepherd, Stickland and Travis Cone had doubles. Holt pitched a four-hitter and struck out four for the Stallions (15-6).
• Nick Williams pitched a shutout and Ryan McIntyre homered as East Davidson (15-5, 9-1) beat West Davidson 4-0 to win the CCC regular-season title.
Chandler Simerson, Chance Fortenberry and Tyler Hunt had two hits each for the Green Dragons (13-8, 8-2).
Carson lost 11-4 to Hickory Ridge in SPC softball on Thursday.
Mariah Morgan had a double and two singles for the Cougars. Michaela White and Kayln Ellenburg had two hits each. Carson fell to 7-8 in the SAC and in a three-way tie for fifth in the SPC with East Rowan and South Rowan.
South plays at East today to finish the regular season, while Carson is home against Cox Mill. The SPC gets five playoff berths.
• A.L. Brown won 6-5 against Hopewell on Thursday and is 15-4 overall and 9-3 in the MECKA.

Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators (14-13) put the tying run on third base in the with one out in the ninth inning but couldn’t bring him home in a 5-4 loss to the West Virginia Power on Thursday night at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
The Power hit two homers and took the series 3-2.
Adam Engel and Cleuluis Rondon had three hits each for Kannapolis.

There will be two summer sessions for A.L. Brown’s basketball camp for boys and girls, ages 8-14.
Sessions will be held June 30-July 2 and July 7-9.

The NCHSAA approved mercy rules for basketball and football at its spring meeting.
If a basketball game reaches a 40-point differential at halftime or thereafter, will use a running clock except for timeouts.
If a football game reaches a 42-point differential at halftime or thereafter, a running clock will be used, with stoppages only after scores or timeouts. Games can be stopped by mutual agreement. Aug. 1 was approved as the first day of football practice for 2015 and 2016.
Volleyball teams will be limited to 23 matches in the regular season.

Catawba second baseman Julio Zubillaga (Carson) and first baseman Paul Kronenfeld were named to the all-district academic team.
Zubillaga, a four-time SAC Gold Glove winner, is batting .270 with 14 doubles, three homers and 33 RBIs. He has a 3.81 GPA in business administration.
Kronenfeld is batting .377 with 18 doubles, six homers and 38 RBIs.
Catawba pitcher Carley Tysinger was named to the all-district academic team.
Tysinger won 18 games, posted a 1.29 ERA and struck out 293 batters. She hit four homers and batted .291.
Tysinger has a 3.73 GPA as a chemistry major.
Knox won 6-3 against China Grove. Singles winners for Knox were Simon Post, Roarke Burton, Cole Goodnight and Luke Grenoble.
Doubles winners for Knox were Goodnight-Post and Burton-Grenoble.
• Knox won 7-2 against Corriher-Lipe. Singes winners for the Trojans were Post, Burton, Goodnight, Grenboble and Zacgh Chichester. Post-Goodnight and Burton-Grenoble won in doubles for the Trojans (11-1).
• Southeast won 8-1 against Erwin. Singles winners for the Patriots were Hunter Smith, Jailen Williams, James Ruiz, Trexler Cloninger and Jerry Cipres. Smith Williams, Ruiz-Alex Mercado and Cloninger-Cipres won in doubles.
• Southeast won 8-1 against West Rowan Middle.
Smith, Ruiz, Cloninger, Mercado and Cipres won in singles. Smith-Williams, Ruiz-Cloninger and Mercado-Cipres won doubles.
Hayden Setzer pitched a complete game as Erwin won 8-6 against Mooresville.
Setzer had two hits, scored three runs and had a run-scoring double.
Every Eagle in the lineup had a hit.
• Owen White went 5-for-5, hit a grand slam and drove in eight runs as West Rowan Middle beat Southeast 10-4.
Olen Stamper pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs.
Paul Cuthbertson scored his fifth career hole-in-on one on Monday while playing at Corbin Hills.
Cuthbertson aced the 178-yard No. 16 hole using a 4-iron.
Kenneth Cornelius and Floyd Cuthbertson witnessed the feat.
• The Doug Gobble Scholarship Fundraiser Tournament is scheduled for May 17 at Corbin Hills.
The start time is 9 a.m. The entry fee is $50 per player (Includes on course food/beverages, post-play meal and prizes). Hole sponsorships are $100. Proceeds benefit the Doug Gobble Memorial Scholarships which are given to area high school baseball and basketball players that are bound for college.

Mooresville American Legion Post 66 will have sign-ups Sunday, May 4, at Lake Norman High at 2 p.m.
Junior and Senior Legion players should attend, rain or shine. This is not a tryout. Bring a birth certificate, not a glove. Play starts late May and runs into July. Post 66 baseball is open to any high school age baseball player subject to area zone rules.
