Police charged three men Thursday after they fled a late night license checkpoint at the intersection of Lincolnton and Wilson roads. Police officials said the driver spotted the checkpoint, turned his headlights off and turned before approaching the intersection.
Salisbury Police charged Larry Anthony Martin, 58, of the 100 block of South Oakhurst Drive, with felony possession with intent to manufacture sell and deliver a controlled schedule II substance, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and misdemeanor driving while impaired. He was issued a $5,000 secured bond and remains in the Rowan County Detention Center.
Police said Martin was the driver of a Honda Pilot who, along with passengers, dumped drugs and other items out of the car as police approached. They were stopped just before 11 p.m. in the 700 block of Lincolnton Road.
The passengers in the car were Charles Anthony Everhart, 43, of the 300 block of Harrison Road, and Richard Lam Wood, 57, of the 700 block of Pinehurst Street.
Everhart gave authorities the name Al Turner, but police were able to determine his identity. He was charged with misdemeanor resist, obstruct, delay an officer; felony possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver a controlled schedule II substance, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor open container of alcohol and misdemeanor failure to appear/comply. He was issued a $5,000 secured bond and remains in the Rowan County jail.
Wood was charged with three counts failure to appear/comply for two driving while licenes revoked charges and a seat belt violation out of Guilford County. He was issued a $200 secured bond and has since been released from the Rowan County jail.
Police could see the driver, later identified as Martin, and passenger Charles Everhart dumping items out of the windows. When officers caught up to the vehicle, they could smell a strong odor of alcohol. Police found a 40 ounce Icehouse beer in the center console, a glass crack pipe outside the vehicle and 3.5 grams of crack cocaine in a clear bag.
