Rowan authorities say a Rockwell man shot himself in the head Saturday as deputies were there to serve arrest warrants for sex offenses.
Officials said in a statement from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office that Michael Reece Mullis, 63, of the 100 block of James Drive, came to the door in his bed clothes and after being told deputies had warrants for his arrest, he asked to put his shoes on.
While one deputy remained with Mullis’ wife, a second deputy escorted Mullis into the master bedroom, the statement said.
Once inside the bedroom, Mullis went into the master bathroom and attempted to slam the door shut. The deputy was able to push the door quickly and observed Mullis with a .357 Magnum pistol in his hand. Mullis shot himself and died at the scene.
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Division responded to the scene to investigate the suicide. Concord Police Department initiated the outstanding warrants.
