MOCKSVILLE–Davie County was looking to flip the script last night on West Rowan, and the War Eagles couldn’t have scripted a better start, reaching the end zone on the game’s second play from scrimmage.
You’d think an 84-yard pass from Parker Correll to Ben Ellis 46 seconds into the game would have staggered visiting West Rowan, but Harrison Baucom and the Falcons’ ground attack concocted a stunning 34 unanswered points in the first half.
The Falcons (1-1) weathered a Davie County storm to win 48-36 for their sixth straight victory in the series.
“We needed this one bad,” West Rowan head coach Scott Young said.
Baucom was a one-man gang. He rushed for 241 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries, he converted six extra points, averaged 47 yards on six punts and caught Kacey Otto’s lone completion for 33 yards. Baucom accounted for 274 of West Rowan’s 326 yards.
West Rowan scored touchdowns on its final five possessions of the first half to build a 34-7 lead.
“They got after us up front, and we couldn’t find an answer for it,” Davie coach Devore Holman said.
Davie County came out of the locker room with a vengeance. On its first play of the third quarter, Correll and Ellis hooked up for a 78-yard score that made it 34-14. The War Eagles’ momentum, though, was short-lived as Juwan Houston returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to the end zone.
The War Eagles pulled within 48-36 with 10 minutes, 44 seconds remaining, but West Rowan’s defense turned back Davie County’s final two possessions.
The Falcons withstood historic performances by Correll and Ellis, who set the school record for receiving yards in a game with six catches for 253 yards and three touchdowns. Correll (14 of 25 for 300 yards) moved into second place with 30 career TD passes, as well as delivering just the fifth 300-yard game in school history.
Davie’s loss was compounded by a knee injury to star Cade Carney, who left in the final minute of the third and did not return.
