Salisbury Police on Tuesday seized more than 2 pounds of marijuana and arrested five people after stopping a vehicle near the intersection of East 11th and North Long streets.
The police interdiction team stopped a vehicle because of a license plate light issue after the vehicle sped out of East Spencer’s limits, said Salisbury Police spokesperson Capt. Shelia Lingle.
Lingle said a passenger in the back seat of the vehicle, one of five in the car, was moving around in the back. A Salisbury Police officer spotted marijuana in the car. The marijuana was in brick form, with several other bits in small bags, Lingle said.
All of the vehicle’s occupants, Jaquarius O’Brian Givens, 17; Mariah Shantele Gregory, 21; Shanice Aquicha Oglesby, 24; Jerry Lamont Ellis, 42; and Jayquan Kyon Hamilton, 19, were charged with possession of a schedule IV controlled substance with intent to sell and deliver.
Lingle said the stop is part of routine duties for the police interdiction team.
“They will hit up certain areas at certain times,” Lingle said about the team. “They happened to be sitting up there just watching. That’s when the vehicle came by with the tag light and high speed.”
Each of the five charged were given a $3,500 bail. All of the arrested people except Oblesby remain in the Rowan County Jail this morning.
