Rowan Crosby Scholars hosted its first fundraiser, BBQ, Bands & Boots, on Sept. 27 in the F&M Trolley Barn.

Guests enjoyed smoked barbecue pork, chicken and sides and bourbon served from a uniquely decorated bread truck.

Entertainment included fabulous music from Life Size, a Catawba College-formed band and a “happy” crew of folks who engaged in what some are calling Rowan County’s first flash mob. The evening’s headliner was regional favorite bluegrass band, Mipso, who provided a listening treat for all.

The proceeds from the event will directly support Crosby Scholars’ Last Dollar Grants program, which will help offset unmet financial need for college-going Crosby Scholars.

Crosby Scholars is a free college access program available to all Rowan County public school students beginning in sixth grade. The program helps students prepare academically, financially and personally for college opportunities after high school. With less than half of Rowan County high school graduates going to college, Crosby Scholars is striving to bring about a “college-going culture” in Rowan County.
