Area Sports Briefs: Carson qualifies; Marchinko takes 2nd regional

Carson’s boys cross country team finished fourth in the 3A Midwest Regional held at Charlotte’s McAlpine Greenway on Saturday and qualified to compete in the state meet on Nov. 1.
Carson’s Zachary Marchinko finished second individually in 15:43. Marchinko was two seconds behind Weddington’s Mitchell Resor.
Carson’s other runners were Garrett Ingold (15th, 16:40), Nick Cox (17:06), Grant Doby (17:14), Jonah Evans (17:25), Dylan Koontz (17:26) and Hunter Kimball (17:31).
Weddington won the regional. Northwest Cabarrus placed fifth.
East Rowan finished eighth. Conor Honeycutt led the Mustangs. He was 24th in 16:55. Other top runners for the Mustangs were Sean Incardona (17:21), Trevor L’Hommedieu (17:41), Ross Alexander (18:01) and Nikolas Pillsbury (18:02).
Leading West Rowan was Andrew Burgess (17:48), The top runner for South Rowan was Kurtis Reed (17:55).
3A girls
Marvin Ridge won the girls meet.
Carson placed 10th. Top runners for the Cougars were Jesse Nichols (29th, 21:12), Summer Blais (21:14), Olivia Gabriel (22:24), Kelly Short (22:59) and Hannah Venable (23:07).
Josie Heglar led West Rowan in 21:24. Faith Blume ran 22:00 to lead East Rowan. Micah Helms ran 23:28 to lead South Rowan.
2A boys
Salisbury’s boys placed sixth in the 2A Midwest Regional at Kernersville’s Redmon Sports Complex.
Matt Washko (29th, 17:53) led the Hornets, with Alex Yang (30th, 17:56) right behind him.
Other runners for the Hornets were Thurston Alexander (18:14), Keegan Dillon (18:48), Sam McNeely (19:17), John Yang (19:37) and Max Patel (20:19).
North Rowan’s top runners were Lucas Beam (22:34) and Malik Holmes (22:38).
2A girls
Salisbury’s girls were led by All-CCC runner Mary Kauffman (25th, 22:36) and Grace Williams (25:18),
North Rowan’s top runners were Meghan Karczewski (25:29) and Rebecca Horning (25:38).
4A boys
In the 4A West Regional at McAlpine, Kellen Corson (11th, 16:24) and Brandon Hernandez (12th, 16:26) led A.L. Brown’s boys to a sixth-place finish.
• Nick Simmons (28th, 16:36) was the top runner for Davie in the 4A Midwest Regional in Kernersville.
4A girls
Jela Lewter led A.L. Brown’s girls in the West Regional. She ran 20:45.
• Leading Davie in the Midwest Regional was Katelyn Hernandez in 21:34.
Local golf
Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot 65-67-69-75 — 280 and finished 8-under in a Web.com Qualifying School first-stage tournament held at Pinewild Country Club’s Magnolia Course in Pinehurst, Tuesday through Friday.
Adams advances to the second stage in Brooksville, Fla., in November.
• In the first round of a N.C. Junior Golf Foundation junior tournament at Irish Creek, Davis Richards shot 9-under 62 with an eagle.
Prep tennis
Gray Stone’s doubles team of Meghan Hedgepeth- Brooke Herlocker lost to Community School of Davidson’s Courtney Mudge-Marisa Deininger 6-3, 6-4 in the 1A state championship match on Saturday.
