Prep football roundup …

West Rowan struggled Friday prior to a second-quarter lightning delay at Cox Mill and still couldn’t get it going on Monday.

The Falcons lost 27-13 to the Chargers and dropped their fourth in a row. West Rowan (6-4,  4-3 SPC)  has lost four straight for the first time since 1998.

“We’re just really struggling offensively right now,” West Rowan coach Scott Young said. “What we do is based on being able to run the ball successfully, and it’s been a struggle the last few weeks. If we can’t run it, it’s tough for us to throw it.”

Young lauded the efforts of defensive linemen Derrick Moreland and Darius Williamson and DB Quameak Lewis. Those three have played well in just about every game this season.

Cox Mill (5-5, 4-3) is a high-powered offensive team, but the Falcons got enough stops to have a chance.

“We were driving down 12-6 and had an errant snap that we lost 9 yards on,” Young said. “When were down 20-6, we had a dropped pass on a big play that would’ve gotten us back into it. It was just a perfect combination of us not making a play when we had the  opportunity and of them making some really big ones.”

The Falcons had awful field position most of the second half.

Harrison Baucom scored on a  2-yard run for the Falcons on Friday before the weather issues, his 13th TD of the season.

Kacey Otto threw a 5-yard pass to Kortez Weeks on Monday. Otto has nine TD passes, while Weeks has three TD catches.

Weeks didn’t play Friday but was cleared by doctors to play Monday.

Despite its recent woes, West Rowan is sure to be in the 3A playoffs with six overall wins and four league victories.

The Falcons take on second-place Hickory Ridge at home on Friday.

“It’ll be Senior Night, and we’ll try to get it turned around,” Young said.

Brown 42, W. Charlotte 14

A.L. Brown coach Mike Newsome saw the best and worst from his team in a matter of days, but the Wonders showed up ready to play on Monday and battered West Charlotte 42-14 on the road for a MECKA win they had to have.

The game was suspended by lightning on Friday.

“Coming back from Charlotte on Friday, we were way, way out of focus, so I was extremely concerned about going back over there,” Newsome said. “But tonight we were really focused. We did the things we’re capable of, took care of business, and played about as well as we can play.”

It was an emotional West Charlotte team the Wonders faced. The Lions (4-6, 2-4) lost head coach Mo Collins, who died at 38, last weekend.

QB Damon Johnson and running backs Jayln Cagle and Sandon McCoy had big games for the Wonders.

McCoy rushed 21 times for 141 yards and three TDs, Johnson was 9-for-11 for 137 passing yards and  added 80 rushing yards. Cagle rushed 12 times for 96 yards and a score.

Brylan Weaks had four catches for 72 yards and a TD.

“Damon played extremely well — he’s  starting to figure it all out,” Newsome said. “He made some great throws.”

The Wonders (5-5, 3-3) play at Hopewell to finish the regular season. They’ll be in the 4A playoffs if they win that one.

“We’ve got a pretty good football team, and we’ll be playing teams closer to our size in small 4A,” Newsome said.
