Area Sports Briefs: Locklear to sign with UNC Pembroke

South Rowan senior guard Avery Locklear, the 2014 Rowan County Player of the Year, will sign Wednesday with UNC Pembroke.

Locklear has scored 400-plus points three straight seasons. She averaged 16.1 points as a freshman, 19.1 as a sophomore, and 20.2 as a junior.

Locklear has averaged 18.3 points per game in her 71-game career. The school record for points per game is  Wanda Watkins’ 18.4.

Locklear has 1,300 career points. Jill Cress holds the school record with 1,529.

Prep football

Greensboro Dudley High, the No. 1 seed in the 4A football playoffs,  has an  issue with ineligible players and could be ousted from the state  playoffs.

The issue arose from the Nov. 7 game with Southeast Guilford. Dudley self-reported the violation.

Since the ineligible player report came after NCHSAA brackets had been finalized, Dudley is out of the playoffs — pending an appeal.

The  school’s appeal to the Executive Committee of the NCHSAA is scheduled to be  heard Wednesday morning.

No seeds or pairings would change if Dudley is eliminated. No. 16 seed Ragsdale would advance to the second round.

Women’s basketball

Livingstone opens its women’s basketball season on Sunday, Nov. 16, with a 2 p.m. home game against  Johnson & Wales.

Livingstone went 12-15 last season.

Cierra York,  a senior guard who was chosen for the preseason All-CIAA team, is expected to lead the Blue Bears.  Wende Foster, second in D-II in blocked shots last season, will anchor the Livingstone defense.

College basketball

Catawba plays at home this weekend. The Indians and Lenor-Rhyne will be taking on UNC Pembroke and Francis Marion in a SAC vs. Sun Belt challenge, with games at 6 and 8 both days.

• Newberry lost 112-86 to Charlotte at Halton Arena on Tuesday. Dondray Walker and Brandon Taylor scored 11 points each for the Wolves.

NCHSAA

CJay Sparks of Jacksonville and Connor Bowers of Ashe County were named winners of the Performance of the Week awards.

Sparks, a senior forward on the Jacksonville  soccer team, had seven goals and two assists in three Jacksonville playoff victories.

Bowers, a senior quarterback, completed 22 of 33 passes for 343 yards and four touchdowns as the Huskies beat Elkin 34-20.

North Hills

The North Hills varsity basketball teams opened  against Caldwell Academy.  The North Hills boys won 76-61.  The Eagles were led by Leonard Murdock with 25 points and Chris Taylor with 23.

The North Hills girls were led by Sieria Eagle with 14 points and Olivia Houghton with 13.

The Eagles play at Alamance Christian on Friday.

Sacred Heart

The Sacred Heart jayvee basketball teams hosted Our Lady of Mercy from Winston- Salem on Monday .

The Sacred Heart girls won 16-10 against OLM.  Rachel McCullough scored all 16 points for the Dolphins, four in each quarter.

The Sacred Heart jayvees  lost 40-24.  Jalon Walker and Will Webb scored 10 points each for the Dolphins.

Other standouts for the Green Dragons included  Maddox Goodnight, Reed Brixey and Nick Antosek.
