LANDIS — Sometimes the best timeouts are the ones you don’t call. Just ask Bryan Withers.
The South Rowan boys basketball coach requested — and was granted – his final timeout with 3.7 seconds remaining Friday night, just as senior Quan Rhyne hit a potential game-tying 3-pointer from the right side. The basket was waved off, the timeout wasn’t and South dropped a 53-50 SPC decision to visiting Carson.
Sophomore Armoni Hogue had 15 points and teammate Jonathan Rucker 12 to lift Carson (5-3, 2-2) to its second conference win on the road this week. Junior Colson Childers knocked down five 3-pointers to lead the Raiders (1-6, 1-4), who dropped their sixth straight game. Rhyne added 10 points in his first game since suffering a football injury.
Carson (53): Hogue 15, Rucker 12, Westbrook 8, Herron 6, Isom 6, Whicker 3, Hairston 2, Bearden 1.
South Rowan (50): Childers 18, Rhyne 10, L.Hill 9, Wilder 4, Littlejohn 4, Stewart 3, Finger 2, D.Hill, Rary.
Carson 16 10 12 15 — 53
