Area Sports Briefs: Livingstone splits

It’s never easy on the road in the CIAA, and Livingstone’s women’s basketball team had to make clutch free throws to hold off Lincoln 70-65 on Monday in Pennsylvania.

Kyra Crosby scored 12 points for the Blue Bears. Labrea Walker and Aliyah Grinage had 10 each. Walker had five assists. Crosby had eight rebounds.

Zephrah Pam scored 18 for the Lions.

Ranked ninth in the region, Livingstone has lost two exhibitions to D-I schools,  but stayed unbeaten (12-0, 3-0) in official contests.

Livingstone appeared to have the game under control with a 16-point lead with 11 minutes left, but Lincoln (9-3) staged a big comeback.

Livingstone shot 37.5  percent,  turned the ball over 25 times  and made only two 3-pointers. The Blue Bears won because of an overwhelming edge at the foul line. They were 26-for-41, while the home team was a dismal 8-for-24.

Livingstone went 3-0 on its swing through the Northern Division and is home on Thursday and Saturday.

Livingstone men

Livingstone’s men’s basketball team lost 69-64 at Lincoln on Monday in CIAA action.

Eric Dubose led the Blue Bears (7-5, 1-2) with 21 points. He hit three 3-pointers.

Eric Mayo had 17 points and 13 rebounds. Hakeem Jackson scored 11.

Quaman Burton and Josh Davis had 18 apiece to lead  the Lions (9-4, 3-0).

Livingstone came into the game ranked 10th in the region.

Neither team shot well. Livingstone shot 37.5 percent but held Lincoln to 31.7-percent shooting.

The difference was at the foul line. Lincoln got to the line more and shot a better percentage. Lincoln was 29-for-40 on free throws, while Livingstone was 19-for-33.

Livingstone concluded a three-game road swing against the Northern Division with a 1-2 mark.

The Blue Bear men are home Thursday for the first time all season. Fans are urged to wear blue or black.

Sacred Heart hoops

Sacred Heart’s jayvee girls won 25-15 against St. John’s of Winston-Salem.  Rachel McCullough had 18 points to lead the Dolphins.

• Sacred Heart’s jayvee girls lost 13-5 to Salisbury Academy.

Gianna Patella led the Dolphins with three points. Maggie Dees scored six for Salisbury Academy.

• Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys won 47-6 against St. John’s.  Colin Donaldson had 11 pts, Nick Antosek had nine, Jalon Walker had six, and Ben Childress had five.

• Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys won 36-30 against Salisbury Academy.

  Will Webb led the Dolphins with 16 pts. Luke Graeber scored six.

Nicholas Peltz scored 16 for the Jaguars.

Salisbury Academy hosts  the Sacred Heart jayvees (Wednesday) and the  Sacred Heart varsity on Thursday.

  

Umpire clinic

  NSA will hold an umpire clinic at Tilley Harley-Davidson in Salisbury on Jan. 18.

This clinic is for slow- pitch officials only.

  Registration will begin at 9 a.m.  with the clinic beginning shortly after.

The fee for this clinic is $55.  Those interested in umpiring league or tournament play should plan on attending.  Mechanics and rules will be taught by Eastern Zone Umpire-in-chief Mike Snyder.  For more information,  contact women’s state director Genna Livengood at 704-239-6693.

Women’s hoops

  Ayana Avery (West Rowan) scored eight points and helped Radford beat Charleston Southern 53-51 on Monday.

• In Charlotte’s 66-67 loss to Old Dominion on Sunday,  Olivia Rankin (Salisbury) had six points and four rebounds.

Men’s hoops

Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) had 23 points and five assists as GRU Augusta won 76-74 against Francis Marion on Monday.

• Nate Jones (Davie) scored 28 points in Davidson County Community College’s 96-90 loss to Brunswick CC.
