A Cabarrus County man was in critical condition Thursday following a single-vehicle traffic collision on Dunns Mountain Road.
N.C. Highway Patrol officials would not release his name until they contacted his nearest relatives.
The 21-year-old man was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte with a head injury, said Trooper C.T. Walker.
He was driving north on Dunns Mountain Road in a 1996 Nissan around 8:30 a.m. when he traveled off the right side of the road. He crossed to the left side of the road and struck a utility pole. The impact occurred on the passenger’s side of the vehicle.
The man was the only person in the vehicle and his was the only car involved in the crash.
Walker said the man was wearing a seat belt, but the airbags did not deploy.
The victim was not trapped inside the vehicle, nor was he thrown from the vehicle, Walker said.
“He was unresponsive and has been unresponsive,” the trooper said.
There was no suspicion of any impairment, but there is a possibility that he had a medical condition.
The driver had seizures after the trooper and Rowan EMS arrived.
