Sidewalks, pool halls and financials on council agenda

There are no major items on the agenda for Salisbury City Council’s meeting Tuesday.

Council will authorize an agreement between the city and the North Carolina Department of Transportation regarding new sidewalks on the south side of Jake Alexander Boulevard between Klumac Road and the road leading to Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.

In September, council approved the construction, which was paid for by the Department of Transportation. Now that the 1,500 feet of sidewalk is finished, the city will be responsible for maintaining it, according to the agreement.

Also, council will receive a  request for a pool-hall permit from a bar near the former Salisbury Mall.

The Carriage Room is located at 2141 Statesville Boulevard in the same plaza as Aaron’s furniture and Dollar General.

Mary Jane Kotsalis is the owner and is requesting the permit, which would allow the bar to use its two pool tables in a for-profit capacity.

Council will have to set a date for a public hearing, likely Feb. 3, on the permit request.

Council will also hear a report on the city’s financials for the second quarter of the 2014-15 fiscal year.

City Council meets Tuesday at 4 p.m. at City Hall.

In other business:

• The Historic Preservation Commission, Hurley Park Advisory Board, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, and Tree Board will present their 2014 highlights and 2015 goals to council.

• Council will go into closed session to consult with an attorney and discuss a personnel matter.
