A man was charged with assault and larceny early Sunday after he took money out of a woman’s pocketbook at a bar, according to police.

Rochelle Lucas Hamilton, 36, of the 600 block of White Rock Ave. in Granite Quarry, was arrested after a woman said he took over $250 from her pocketbook at The Carriage Room bar on Statesville Boulevard shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday.

A woman said she left her pocketbook on a bar stool while she and a friend went over to the jukebox. When she came back to her seat, $260 was missing from the pocketbook. A man told her Hamilton had taken her money.

According to police, the woman confronted Hamilton about the money. Hamilton then pushed her and pulled the money out of his shirt pocket and threw it on the pool table before walking out of the bar.

Police were called, and they picked up Hamilton on their way to the bar.

Hamilton was also charged with an outstanding warrant of obtaining property by false pretense.
