Area Sports Briefs: Livingstone men lose 108-106

Livingstone’s men lost 108-106 to CIAA rival Johnson C. Smith on Saturday afternoon in front of a capacity crowd at Brayboy Gym.

Livingstone trailed by as many as 16 but made it exciting at the end.

Livingstone got six 3-pointers and 29 points from Ty Newman.  Eric Dubose had 27. Hakeem Jackson (11) and Eric Mayo (10) also reached double figures.

J.C. Smith led 97-82 with three minutes left, but Livingstone (14-9, 8-6)  got within 103-101 with 19 seconds left.

Robert Davis made two free throws for the Golden Bulls with 4.7 seconds left for a four-point lead.

After Dubose made three free throws for the Blue Bears, it was 107-106.  Markell Lotharp hit one  of two free throws for the Bulls with 1.7 seconds left.

Then Livingstone guard Robert Flint’s desperation shot at the horn was off the mark.

The 108 points was the most scored by J.C. Smith since a 109-61 win over St. Paul’s on January 11, 2005.

Lotharp led the Bulls  (13-12, 7-7) with 25 points. Emilio Parks had 22, and Diondre Pratt scored 21. Stedmon Lemon had 20.

Livingstone shot better than 50 percent, but J.C. Smith 57 percent.

Catawba baseball

  Catawba completed a three-game sweep of  Stillman on Saturday  in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Catawba (6-3) won 10-1 and 20-5 on Saturday over the Tigers (1-9).

Craig Brooks pitched five innings for the win in the opener and struck out six.  The Indians scored  nine runs in the first inning. T.J. Wharton and Blake Houston (South Rowan) led the onslaught.

Freshman Connor Johnson (East Rowan) improved to 3-0 with five shutout innings in the nightcap. Dylan Richardson four RBIs.

Catawba softball

Catawba’s softball team split with UNC Pembroke on Saturday.

Catawba (4-2)  lost the opener 9-1 but won the nightcap 13-4.

Caroline Turner homered in the opener and was the winning pitcher in the  second game.

  Emily Huneycutt had four hits in the doubleheader for the Indians.

Catawba women

Catawba’s five-game winning streak ended Saturday, while  Anderson’s winning streak swelled to 12.

Anderson beat the Indians 70-59, with the Trojans’ 17-9 edge in forcing turnovers looming as the key statistic. Anderson (19-3, 16-2 SAC) stayed tied with Wingate for first place. Catawba (14-9, 11-7 SAC) dropped from a tie for third into fourth place.

Guards Sierra Simpson (19 points) and Lesley Woods (17) supplied Anderson’s offense.

Catawba got 16 points and 16 rebounds from Terri Rogers and 14 points from Bri Johnson but missed key free throws.

Anderson’s last loss came when it fell to Catawba 74-60 at home on Jan. 3.  That game marked the Indians’ sixth straight win in the series with Anderson, but the Trojans broke through Saturday.

Catawba athletics

  Both Catawba tennis  teams lost at Anderson on Saturday. The men lost 7-2, while the Catawba women lost 8-1.

• Kristyn Kruse scored with 27 seconds left in double overtime to give Catawba a 14-13 women’s lacrosse win against Shorter.

Jayvee hoops

Carson’s jayvee boys finished 14-2 in the SPC with a 61-59 win against Cox Mill on Friday.

Jailen Williams scored 15, Elijah Moss had 13, and Cameron Prugh scored nine.

• East Rowan’s boys finished the season 12-6  with a 71-54 win against South Rowan on Friday.

  Lucas Morton  scored 18 points, and Franklin Downing had 17. Tate Houpe went 3-for-3 on 3-pointers and scored 13.  Paiton File had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Davie hoops

Madison Zaferatos (14 points), Asiah Peterson (11) and Ashlyn Hampton (10) led Davie’s girls to a  48-41 win against Mount Tabor on Friday and ended a 21-game losing streak against the Spartans.

Davie finished second and will play at home on Monday in the CPC tournament.

• Davie’s boys finished the regular season with an 84-59 loss to Mount Tabor.

Jordan McDaniel and Tre Redmond scored 13 each for the War Eagles. Holden Poole had 11.

North Hills

The North Hills varsity boys won 80-67 gainst Piedmont Community Charter.  Chris Taylor scored 25 points,  Leonad Murdoch had 24, and Collin Turner scored 19.

NCHSAA

Que Tucker has been named interim commissioner of the NCHSAA, to step in after current commissioner Davis Whitfield leaves the position.

Tucker will be appointed starting June 1, prior to Whitfield’s departure to become chief operating officer of the National Federation of State High School Associations in Indianapolis at the end of June.
