A Salisbury man was charged with heroin possession after a deputy spotted his vehicle in an area known to be where prostitution takes place and drugs are used, a report said.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office charged Ernest Hayes Smith, 26, of the 1400 block of Potneck Road, with felony heroin possession and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He has since been released from the Rowan County jail under a $1,500 secured bond.

The officer saw a green Toyota Tundra sitting in the dead end of Crowder Dixon Road. When the deputy walked up to the driver’s side window he could see the driver, later identified as Smith, lean over the center console with a lighter in his lap and a flat piece of tin foil. The foil had a small amount of black tar heroin in it.

He also had a cut black straw and a cellphone. The officer knocked on the window and the driver threw the items that were in his lap onto the floor. He was asked to step outside the vehicle.

Smith later told the deputy he had other narcotics in a compartment inside the driver’s side door. Smith was arrested and placed into a patrol car. The deputy searched the compartment and found a clear plastic tube with a green lid on it. The tub had one gram of black tar heroin.
