Area Sports Briefs: Thorne 7th in 100-mile race

Salisbury’s Martin Thorne, 49, finished 100 miles in 16 hours, 43 minutes (10:02 per mile pace) and placed seventh in the Umstead 100 Mile Endurance Race in Raleigh.
Thorne received the finisher’s belt buckle for 100 miles in a day. Thorne finished his first 100-mile race last spring in 23 hours and 30 minutes (14:06 per mile pace).
A total of 258 runners started the race, and 145 finished 100 miles under the official time limit of 30 hours.
The Umstead 100 Mile Endurance Race is held the last Saturday of March each year and attracts runners from across the country.
Rowan Legion
Rowan County American Legion baseball announced the 2015 schedule on Wednesday.
Opening night is set for May 23 — a home game at Newman Park against High Point.
• Rowan County American Legion baseball is holding sign-ups for Senior and Junior teams on April 12 at 4 p.m.
The meeting will be held at the Harold B. Jarrett Post 342 on Lincolnton Road in Salisbury.
Players need to bring a copy of their birth certificate or a copy of their driver’s license.
Parents should plan to attend to sign medical forms. A notary public will be on hand to notarize Form 2’s. Any questions should be directed to team manager Mark Cauble at 704-798-9991.
American Legion
ESPN will expand its live coverage of The American Legion World Series to broadcast two semifinal games, Aug. 17, on its ESPNU channel in addition to the championship game on Aug. 18.
Now in its 89th year, the five-day American Legion Baseball World Series is played annually at Keeter Stadium in Shelby.
Prep baseball
The Greater Cabarrus Stallions defeated Concord 8-4 in the Easter tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
The Stallions (10-4) were led by Dalton Lankford, with two hits including a two-run double.
Tyler Hartsell had a double and a triple. McConner Wallace had two hits. Travis Cone had two hits and two RBIs.
Sawyer Strickland was the winning pitcher.
• South Rowan plays Lake Norman Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the opening game of the F&M Bank Classic at CMC-NorthEast Stadium.
College track
Carson-Newman freshman Tori Gaul (East Rowan) was named the ASAC Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
Gaul set the school record in the pole vault with a jump of 10 feet, 11 3/4 inches.
College softball
Catawba swept a SAC softball doubleheader from Queens on Wednesday afternoon at Park Road Park.
The Indians won 6-3 and 8-2.
Carley Tysinger pitched two complete games for Catawba (17-13, 6-6 SAC).
The junior allowed the three runs on nine hits in the opener while posting seven strikeouts. In the nightcap, Tysinger scattered four hits with nine strikeouts.
Taylor Adams had three hits, including a homer, in the opener. Katherine Shumaker drove in two runs.
Shumaker, Caroline Turner, Natalie Naturile, Holli Chandler and Kim Fesperman (South Rowan)had two hits each for the Indians.
Catawba is home on Friday against 21st-ranked Anderson for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
College tennis
Both Catawba tennis teams were beaten by Lenoir-Rhyne.
Catawba’s women lost 5-4, while the Catawba men fell 7-2.
Catawba’s women are 9-11 overall and 0-8 in the SAC. Catawba’s men are 12-9 and 2-6 in the SAC.
• Livingstone’s women’s tennis team fell 8-1 to Winston-Salem State.
Local golf
In the eGolf Tour’s Championship at St. James Plantation, Frank Adams III is tied for seventh after the first round. Adams shot 71 on Wednesday.
College track
Livingstone throwers Ebony Moore and Garland Archie were named CIAA field athletes of the week.
Archie has the top discus throw the CIAA in the outdoor season.
