Area Sports Briefs: Spring football games on Saturday

Livingstone will hold its  football Spring Game at Alumni Memorial Stadium on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

This event will be free to the public, and early arrival is suggested for parking and seating.

The Blue Bears, under the direction of head co ach Darryl Williams, will be bringing back key players, including the Drew Powell-to-Jalen Hendricks passing duo.

• Catawba’s Blue-White Spring Game is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Former Catawba Indians Jumal Rolle and L.J. McCray, now NFL defensive backs, are back in town.

Intimidators win

The Kannapolis Intimidators battled into the 12th inning on Friday.

Chris Curley’s two-out double drove in Eddy Alvarez for the go-ahead run in a 4-3 win  over the Lakewood BlueClaws at FirstEnergy Park.

MLB

The Cleveland  Indians purchased the contract of outfielder Jerry Sands (Catawba) from Triple-A Columbus on Friday.

  

Prep baseball

West Rowan’s baseball team crushed Northwest Cabarrus 13-3 in six innings on Friday in Mount Ulla.

Austin Love (3-2) pitched five  innings for the Falcons (10-5, 6-3 SPC) and struck out five.

Kacey Otto had two hits and three RBIs for the Falcons. Omar Bautista knocked in three runs. Noah Teeter had two hits.

The Falcons scored three runs in the first to take charge and had a four-run sixth to end the game by the 10-run-rule.

  Concord rallied to beat South Rowan 7-5 in SPC baseball and threw the league into a logjam.

South Rowan, West Rowan and Concord all have three league losses.

“We played really well for four innings,” South Rowan coach Thad Chrismon said. “We got guys on base and moved ‘em around.”

Peyton Penninger had a two-run single, and Eric Stowe, Ryan Ashworth and Bo Corriher drove in a run apiece, and South lefty  Blake Johnson (4-1) took a 5-2 lead into the fifth.

Concord scored five runs in the fifth against Johnson and Walker Joyce, scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

“They had some good swings in that inning and we just couldn’t get out of the inning.” Chrismon said.

South Rowan (11-4, 7-3)  had a great chance to stage  its own comeback in the sixth but failed to score after loading the bases with one out.

Will “Horse”Horsley went the distance on the mound for the Spiders (9-7, 7-3). Carter Mozingo and Tyler Thomas had key hits.

• The Greater Cabarrus Homeschool Stallions (14-4)  won 9-8 against North Stanly on Thursday.

  Caleb Threadgill’s  sac fly scored Sawyer Strickland in the seventh with the winning run. McConner Wallace had three hits and four RBIs. Hunter Shepherd had three hits and was the winning pitcher.

     

Prep soccer

Emily Muire scored both goals and lifted West Rowan to a 2-1 SPC soccer win against Northwest Cabarrus on Friday.

Claudia Patterson and Addie Coleman were standouts for the Falcons.

• Carson won 3-0 against East Rowan in SPC soccer on Friday.

Cassie Howard scored two goals. Hannah Smith had one.

Megan Bolick had the shutout for the Cougars.

• Leslie Franks scored five goals as South Rowan beat Concord 6-0 in SPC soccer on Friday.

Raquel Landeverde scored the other SR goal.

•SPC frontrunner Cox Mill beat second-place Hickory Ridge 5-2 on Friday.

Prep softball

East Rowan won 3-2 in nine innings against Carson on Friday.

Catawba baseball

Weather has once again altered Catawba’s weekend series. The Indians and Mars Hill will play the series at UNC Asheville’s Greenwood Field and open with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p. m. The finale of the series will be on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Catawba freshman Luke Setzer (East Rowan) is  batting .424 over the last 10 games with 10 RBIs.

Mars Hill has won 10 of its last 14 games.

College tennis

Livingstone’s women lost to Winston-Salem 7-2 on Thursday.

Livingstone is 2-12 and 2-11 in the CIAA.

Local golf

The Corbin Hills Spring Two-Man Tournament is scheduled for  April 25-26.

The format is team Captain’s Choice and will be  flighted after the first round.  Entry fee is $80 per player (non-member) and $50 (member).

Entry includes golf, food and prizes.  Entry does not include team skins for each day and the team buy-in on Sunday.  Start time is set for 1 p.m. both days. For more information or to register a team, call the Corbin Hills staff at 704-636-0672.

• The Doug Gobble Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, at Corbin Hills.

The format is four-player team Captain’s Choice.

Entry fee is $50 per player or $200 per team.  Entry includes prizes, food and beverages.  Mulligans, Tee Busters and the 19th hole are available for $25 per player.  Prizes will be awarded to top three teams. Scholarship money benefits East Rowan High  athletes headed for college.  To sponsor a hole or to register a team, players can call Curt Thomas at 704-239-1262 or Jay Hill at 704-245-4948.

Mid. school tennis

Erwin won 9-0 against  North Rowan for its third straight victory.

Winners in singles were Kevin Agner, Nick Shoemaker, Drew Walker, Lucas Hardin, Billy McGee and Jesse Daubenmire.

Winners in doubles were Shoemaker-Agner, Owen Overcash-Walker and  McGee-Daubenmire.

Mid. school soccer

Erwin’s soccer  team defeated Mooresville 4-0 on Thursday.

Sam Wall scored two goals. Alex Kalogeromitros and Derek Zerron added one apiece.  Wall, Kalogeromitros and Landon Ketchie had assists.   Hunter Eagle recorded 12 saves in goal to earn the shutout.

Defensive leaders were Larson Waller,  Ketchie, Gabe Hinceman, Jose Quintero, Grayson Vail, Ethan Gullett,Tristan Duarte  and Alejandro Murillo.

Tennis tournament

Salisbury High’s Kayla Honeycutt is hosting the ACE (All Children Eating) Benefit Tennis Tournament Saturday at the Salisbury tennis courts beginning at 9 a.m.

All proceeds will fund the SHS food pantry to help students on free and reduced lunch.
