The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will discuss changing start times for the district’s schools at its work session Monday.
An Instructional Day Design Committee comprised of school and district administrators has been meeting for several months trying to come up with a plan to ensure consistent start times for students by grade level, consistent work hours for employees and a later start time by 30 minutes. They also sought to flip high school and elementary start times and provide parameters for instructional schedules inside the school day.
According to an attachment to the meeting agenda, the committee found that in order to meet all these goals, an additional 19 buses would have to be purchased.
The board will discuss alternatives that meet as many of the goals as possible.
The board will also discuss teacher pay.
Right now, once Rowan-Salisbury teachers reach their 12th year of employment, they are paid the worst of 10 of the most comparable school districts in the area.
The board will discuss the potential of a 1 percent pay increase, which would put Rowan-Salisbury’s teachers in the middle of the pack.
Also on the agenda:
- Assistant Superintendent Anthony Vann will discuss capital project budgets and timelines, including safety configurations.
- The board will conduct a first read of policies concerning a board attorney, loss prevention, safety and hazard communication, workday and overtime, salary schedule and utilizing personnel.
The board will meet Monday at the district’s administrative offices at 4 p.m., 110 S. Long Street in East Spencer.
