Area Sports Briefs: Cougars rally at Concord

Carson’s baseball team rallied to win 9-7 at Concord on Tuesday.

It was a big SPC victory for the second-place Cougars (13-6, 8-4) and gave them a split with Concord.

The Spiders (9-10, 7-6)  batted around in the first inning, grabbed an early 4-0 lead and stayed on top all the way to the seventh.

Kris Peacock was the difference-maker for Carson, taking the mound in the fourth inning in relief of starter Tanner Christy.Peacock (3-0) didn’t allow a hit the rest of the way.

Carson trailed 7-6 going to the seventh. Peacock came through with the game-tying single, and Brandon Mock’s two-run double gave the Cougars the lead.

Peacock, Heath Mitchem, Owen White and Matt Saul had two hits each for the Cougars.

Carson hosts first-place West Rowan on Wednesday.

• The South Charlotte Panthers announced   West Rowan pitcher Omar Bautista and first baseman Juan Garcia have made commitments to Catawba Valley Community College.

• A.L. Brown won 12-0 against West Charlotte in MECKA baseball on Tuesday.

Daniel O’Kelly pitched the one-hit shutout and struck out 10 in five innings.

Jordan Reid had two doubles. Juan Morgan tripled and doubled. Damon Johnson had three RBIs.

A.L. Brown hosts Mallard Creek Wednesday.

• West Davidson won 15-0 against Lexington in CCC  baseball.  Noah Sharpe threw a perfect game in the three-inning contest  and fanned six.

Holden Lanier homered and drove in four for the Green Dragons (13-1, 5-0 CCC).

• North Rowan lost 6-0 to East Davidson on Tuesday.

  Salisbury won 23-0 against Thomasville at Finch Field in a five-inning CCC game on Tuesday.

  John Yang had four hits and three RBIs. J.T. Austin  hit a grand slam and drove in six runs. Riley Myers had three hits and three RBIs. Myers was the winning pitcher. He allowed one hit and struck out 11.

Salisbury is at home on Wednesday against North Hills.

  

College baseball

Catawba’s Craig Brooks is one of 32 national semifinalists for the Brett Tomko  Award that goes to the best pitcher in Division II.

Catawba’s Will Albertson is one of the national semifinalists for the Tino Martinez Award that goes to the best everyday player in Division II.

• Davidson’s Rob Bain (NW Cabarrus) pitched a shutout in an 11-0 win against Dayton.

College golf

Gardner-Webb’s Jake Kennedy (West Rowan) shot 71-72-78 — 221 and tied for 27th in the Big South Championships.

• George Mason’s Eric Edwards (Salisbury) shot 70-76 — 146 and finished 26th in the Wolfpack  Open.

• Catawba finished 11th in the SAC Men’s Golf Championships at Firethorne Country Club.   Tusculum held off Wingate to win the team title by two shots.    

Senior Matt Hardman led the Catawba men. He followed a first round 78 with a 76 to finish 22nd with a 154 total.

• UNC Greensboro’s Roy Dixon (Salisbury) tied for fifth in the Southern Conference Championships. Dixon shot 73-72-70 — 215.

UNC Greensboro lost in a playoff against East Tennessee State.

  

College softball

  Catawba’s  Holli Chandler was named SAC Player of the Week.

Chandler, a junior from New London,  batted .600 as  the Indians went 4-0.

Prep soccer

South Rowan won 3-2 in overtime against Central Cabarrus in SPC soccer on Tuesday.  Leslie Franks scored twice, and Katelyn Goodman had a goal.

• West Rowan won 3-1 in overtime against East Rowan.

  Salisbury (11-2, 5-1) won 2-1 against East Davidson on Tuesday in a CCC match.

Ceci Cardelle opened the scoring 18 minutes in, finishing a cross from Adna Music inside the 18-yard box.  With the score 1-all late in the first half, Nellie Brown played a vertical ball down the line and found Cardelle . Cardelle beat a defender toward the end-line then tightroped down the line and beat the keeper near post.

“Cardelle has been all guts this season and really provided a spark tonight,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said.

Salisbury got excellent play from Mary Seifert, Amelia Steinman and Kathryn Rusher.

Salisbury is at Lexington at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

  

Prep track

The SPC Track Championships will be held Wednesay and Thursday at East Rowan.

Wednesday’s meet  starts at 4 p.m. with field events and the 4×800 relay.  All other running events start at 5 p.m. Finals will be conducted for girls high jump, discus and pole vault, and boys shot put and long jump.

Prep tennis

East Rowan’s boys (11-0) won against Central Cabarrus on Tuesday to stay undefeated.

  Salisbury’s six entries made it through the first two rounds of the CCC tournament at Lexington and qualified for regionals.

Semifinals and finals will be played Wednesday.

Playing in the semi-finals are Matt Sukkassem and Ben Roy in singles, and the doubles teams of Spencer Storey-David Derrick, and Hunter Carlton- Mathias Decomormand.  The two Salisbury doubles teams are seeded No. 1 and No. 2 in the tournament.

• North Rowan’s Dylan Auten and Chase Thompson have reached the semifinals and are regional qualifiers.

   

Prep softball

West Rowan won 5-4 at East Rowan in SPC softball on Tuesday.

Parker Greene had two RBIs. Peyton Greene and Hunter Gibbons had doubles. Marissa Yow, Savannah Cline and Morgan Corriher had two hits each.

Peyton Greene struck out four.

Coryn Soul had two hits for the Mustangs.

West Rowan plays Carson Wednesday afternoon.

•Carson won 17-1 against Concord in a five-inning game.

Lacee Hunsucker pitched three innings and struck out six. Rylie Stewart pitched two innings and struck out three. Both pitchers allowed one hit.

Hunsucker homered and doubled. Kaycee Kennedy doubled. Krista Peninger and Micah Furr had two RBIs each.

• Caroline Forbis had six strikeouts as Salisbury won 17-0 over Lexington in CCC softball. Michaela Lemmon had two hits for the Hornets.

• Davie swept R.J. Reynolds 15-0 and 17-0 in a CPC doubleheader on Tuesday.

Prep golf

Salisbury shot 159 and won a CCC boys golf match at Sapona on Tuesday.

Gabe Steinman shot 38, Abraham Post shot 39, Alex Antosek shot 41, and Christopher Queen shot 41.

East Davidson (165), North Rowan (219) and Lexington (228) followed the Hornets.

Leading the Cavaliers with a 48 was Will Anthony.

• The SPC Championships are at Corbin Hills on Thursday at 1 p.m.

Middle school golf

Salisbury Academy shot 169 and won a match against Sacred Heart (200) and St. Leo (215) at the Country Club of Salisbury.

  Medalist Charlie Barr shot 38 for the Jaguars (10-1). Other scorers for the Jaguars were Mitch Jeter (41), Hank Robins (44) and Will Fowler (46).

The  conference championship will be played on May 5 in Newton.

Middle school tennis

Knox defeated Mooresville 5-4 on Tuesday.

Singles winners for Knox were Roarke Burton, Luke Grenoble and Jander Rodas.

Doubles winners were Burton-Grenoble and Rodas-Ian Walworth.

Mid. school baseball

West Rowan won 15-5 against North Rowan.

Cameron Graham pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs and had hree hits.  Michael Molenda had two hits, including a homer.

• Southeast won 19-2 against China Grove.

Garrett Alewine went 5-for-5 and drove in four runs. Cole Hales had two hits and four RBIs. Daniel Durham had two hits and two RBIs, and Michael Bostian had two hits and two RBIs.

Alewine also was the winning pitcher. He struck out six.

Middle school soccer

Southeast’s girls defeated China Grove 5-3.

Abbi Solano and Lejla Mehmedovic scored two goals each and Gabby Loeza had one.  Assists were by Mehmedovic, Solano and Kayla DeNicholas.

Skylar Smith was solid in goal. Danielle Arlotta, Lucy Cardona and Briana Saelinger led the defense.  Taylor Conrad excelled on offense and defense.

• Southeast’s boys defeated China Grove  9-1.    Anthony Figueroa had another hat trick, Lupe Bautista scored two goals. Kevin Vasquez, Alex Ortiz,  Edwing Sanchez and Alex Erazo had one apiece.  Vasquez, Erazo and Bautista assisted on several goals.  The efense was led by keeper  Fernando Guerrero, Oscar Nunez, Dylan Mills and Juan Soto.

Intimidators

The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 5-3 to the West Virginia Power in the first game of a South Atlantic League doubleheader on Tuesday. Christian Stringer had three of Kannapolis’ 10 hits.

• The Intimidators won 2-1 in the nightcap. Chris Curley drove in both runs.

NCHSAA

Natalie Tribble of North Iredell and Scott Braswell of Wilmington Hoggard   are the recipients of the 10th annual Toby Webb Coach of the Year Awards given by the NCHSAA.

Local golf

The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played a low gross/low net tournament  on Tuesday.

First Flight winners were Susan Morris, low gross, and Toni Iossi, low net.  Second Flight winners were Wendy Kinsell, low gross, and Azalee Story and Cindy Carmazzi tied for low net.

Third Flight winners were Karla Swanson, low gross, and Monica Green, low net.
