Millbridge Elementary 5K and Beginning Cycling Opportunities Coming Up

On Saturday, May 2, Millbridge Elementary School will host a 5K run and a ½-mile fun run that will take place on school grounds and the roads around the school. Proceeds will be used for school supplies for classrooms. Start time for the 5K Run/Walk is 9 a.m. and the fun run will follow at 10 a.m. Walkers are encouraged in the 5K, while the fun run is for kids, 12 and under. Title sponsor for the events is the Lazy 5 Vets Veterinary Clinic.

Gift cards will be given to the top three overall males and females in the 5K and age group medals will be given three deep in 15 age groups. Each participant will receive a quality Dri-fit T-shirt, a goody bag and refreshments. An award will also be presented to the top team.

The Learn. Act. Grow. Series continues at the South Rowan Public Library on Monday evening, April 27, from 5:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. This week’s workshop title is “Smart Pedaling.” There will be an interesting presentation on how to choose the right bike, fitting it properly and providing normal maintenance. Speakers will also discuss rules of the road and proper cycling etiquette, places to ride and opportunities locally to get started. Call 704-216-7734 for information or to reserve a spot. Seating is limited. The library is located at 920 Kimball Road in China Grove. There is no charge.

Salisbury Parks and Recreation and the Salisbury Rowan Runners kick off a Beginning Cycling Class Thursday, April 30 at the City Park building on Lake Drive in Salisbury. The class is entitled “Are You Ready to Ride?” The class will be taught by Tim Safrit and will include meetings on four consecutive Thursdays. Participants will go on a short bike ride following the classroom sessions of weeks two, three and four. Sessions start at 6 p.m. Weekly topics will include choosing your bike, fitting and maintenance, additional equipment, proper bike etiquette, nutrition and making the most of cycling as exercise. Cost for the class is $50 which includes a Dri-fit training shirt and entry into the Great Berry Ride at Patterson Farms on May 30.
