School board to discuss start times, budget Monday

Superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody will propose a new daily schedule for Rowan-Salisbury Schools Monday.

Under the proposal, the district’s middle schools will start at 7:30 a.m., high schools would start at 8:30 a.m. and elementary school would be split into two groups, starting at 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

The district has been looking for a solution that will provide a later start time for schools, create consistent start times for students by grade levels and work hours for teachers and that would allow high schools to start later and elementary schools to start earlier.

Although the solution doesn’t fix all the problems targeted, it does allow schools to start later in the morning, and provides consistency of start times, work hours and instructional days without the cost of purchasing additional buses.

Executive Director of Elementary Education Alesia Burnette will discuss the roles and responsibilities, as well as the number of teacher assistants in the district.

The board will spend some time preparing 2015-16 budget in advance of its joint meeting with the Rowan County Board of Commissioners Wednesday.

Assistant Superintendent of Operations Anthony Vann will update the board on several capital needs, including a budget for the proposed West Rowan Elementary Elementary School and bleacher repairs across the district.

The board will meet Monday at 5 p.m. at the district’s Long Street Offices, 110 S. Long St. in East Spencer.
