‘Charlotte’s Web’ opens tonight

Horizons Unlimited has appreciation day

As an expression of gratitude for the generosity of all involved in the nature trail renovation, the Horizons Unlimited staff invites the public to enjoy all events, free of charge, scheduled on Saturday, May 9.

n 2-4 p.m.:  Horizons Unlimited Nature Trail Rededication: Following a brief  ceremony, take part in various wetland activities, including Wetland Delineation (What is a Wetland?), Wetland Wildflowers, Aquatic Wildlife, 1842 Setzer School visit.

n  5-6 p.m.: Educational planetarium show, “Earth’s Natural Satellite.” Since ancient times humans have observed Earth’s moon as it waxes and wanes and many myths have been created by numerous cultures.  Also, Live Salisbury Skies: Seasonal Constellations.

n  6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Planetarium Laser Show: Laser Retro: A tribute to the great anthems of the 1980s featuring groups like the Police, Duran Duran, Icicle Works, Depeche Mode and others. Jiggy with the Piggy in Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS — Experience the smells and sights of 80 barbeque competition teams at the Jiggy with the Piggy BBQ Competition and Festival in downtown Kannapolis on May 8 and 9.

Teams from five states are expected to compete at the North Carolina Research Campus sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society.

The public can get in on the fun during the two day festival with more than 100 arts and crafts vendors, concerts, a 5K walk/run, car cruise-in, outdoor movie, and a People’s Choice wings and pork tasting.

This year the Kannapolis Firefighter’s Association and Odell Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department will bring their cooking skills to the festival and sell barbeque to the public during the festival.

Held in downtown Kannapolis, this family-friendly event includes:

May 8: Wing People’s Choice (while supplies last), 7-9 p.m., on the NCResearch Campus lawn. $10/10 wings. Proceeds benefit the Cannon Memorial YMCA.

May 8: Darrell Harwood concert, 7-10 p.m., Downtown. Free.

May 8: Movie on the Campus: Cars (PG), 8:30 p.m.. Free.

May 9: Jiggy with the Piggy 5K, 9 a.m.

May 9: Kannapolis Cruise-in, 11 a.m

May 9: Concerts: The Entertainers, Noon- 2:15 p.m.; Mister Pleaze, 3-5 p.m.; and Fantastic Shakers, 7-10 p.m. Free.

Enter the Faith 4th Idol competition

FAITH — Faith Idol is now accepting entries for the 2015 Faith Idol Competition.

There are three divisions:

Children 12 and under; Juniors age 13-18; Seniors age 19 and above.

First place in each division is $300, second place earns $200 and third place,  $100.

Hoffman on tour

Local composer, jazz pianist, and vocalist Marc Hoffman will perform in NC and SC in May including include Oak Park in Salisbury, Charleston Pour House in Charleston, S.C., McKimmon Center on the NCSU campus in Raleigh, Murphy’s Pub in Boone, and Market On Main in Hickory. Two performances, Charleston Pour House and Murphy’s Pub, will be with NC based jam band, Wavy Train.

 

Improving Your Digital Photography

Are you disappointed by your digital camera’s images? Get a strong technical and creative foundation for making compelling images by improving your photo technique, image composition, and computer control of photos. The course is taught by professional photographer Sean Meyers and advanced amateur Seth Holtzman, in collaboration with Catawba College and Center for Faith & the Arts.

It will meet Thursdays, May 28 to June 25, from 6 to 9 p.m.

TFBC’s Community Night Out 

Trading Ford Baptist Church hosts a Community Night Out on Friday, May 8 starting at 5:30 p.m.

There will be a  cookout with hamburgers and hot dogs, games and bounce houses for the kids, and a live concert with Taylor Ford.  The night will cap off with the family movie “Mom’s Night Out.”

In addition, there will be classic cars on display, and an IPad will be given away (you must be present to win).

Rob McHale Band at CFS Gathering 

CHARLOTTE — The next Charlotte Folk Society Gathering Concert features the Rob McHale Band on Friday, May 8, at the Great Aunt Stella Center in the edge of Uptown.

McHale is a North Carolina storyteller in song who is musically rooted in the Folk and Americana traditions. Reviewers have compared his writing to that of J.J. Cale, Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot.

This second-Friday concert series is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated.

Adult acting classes at OCT

CONCORD — Old Courthouse Theatre, 49 Spring St. NW, announces adult acting classes with instructor Heather Wilson-Bowlby.

Session One: Solo Performance Workshop for age 17 and up. $150. June 2-June 25, Tuesday and Thursday from 6-8 p.m. This 4 week class will guide you through the process of developing a solo performance. At the end of the four weeks you will have the chance to perform your new creation for your family and friends.

Session Two: Acting Intensive for age 17 and up. $150. June 1-June 24, Monday and Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. Scene work in pairs and monologues. Study script analysis and how that applies to developing a character. At the end of the four week process you will have the chance to perform your work for your work for your friends and family.

30th Yadkin canoe and kayak race 

On Saturday, May 9 starting at 9:30 a.m., the  30th annual South Yadkin River Canoe and Kayak Race begins on the South Yadkin River at the US Highway 601 bridge and river access area west of Salisbury. Retired Hollywood set designer has exhibit in Mooresville

MOORESVILLE — An exhibit of paintings by Huntersville resident Monty Elliott is featured at the Mooresville Depot Visual Arts Center, Main St., during the month of May.  The exhibit is open to the public Tuesday through  Friday noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Admission is free.

Elliott’s career spanned 37 years at Fox Studios as an accomplished set designer and art director.  While working in Hollywood,  he designed sets for shows such as Daniel Boone, Brady Bunch, Happy Days, Odd Couple, Laverne & Shirley and Cheers.

In 2012, Monty and his wife Darleen moved to Huntersville in order to be closer to family.

 

Second annual Triad Dog Games

Winston-Salem — The Sergei Foundation’s second annual Triad Dog Games is the only canine competition that features four of the most prominent dog sport competitions at one time in one location —May 16 from 10 a.m. to 5:p.m.  and May 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. — at Tanglewood Park.

Dogs may be entered to compete in dock jumping, disc sports, agility or dachshund races, or bring your friendly, vaccinated pooch to spectate.  There are events for beginners to pros.

Deadline to register is  May 11. LEGO Festival 

CONCORD — May 9-10 at the Embassy Suites Charlotte/Concord. The event brings some of the country’s top LEGO builders in to create amazing creations during a private event on Thursday and Friday, and then the public comes to the ticketed event on Saturday and Sunday. Other activities include a Cool Car Building Contest, to a Free Build Room (filled with loose LEGO bricks) and a Theatre that shows non-stop animated LEGO films all weekend. A percentage of ticket sales, and proceeds from the benefit auction,go to the Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation.
