CHINA GROVE — South Rowan High School was on lockdown Thursday morning and law enforcement were on campus following a threat made on social media, officials said.
On Wednesday afternoon, Landis Police were made aware of a post that had been made on a social media site that the person who wrote the post aimed to “shoot the place up,” according to Landis Police Capt. Roger Hosey.
He said in a statement released on the police department’s Facebook page that the initial threats were made between people who’d been involved in earlier off-campus altercation. As a precaution, extra officers were placed on campus.
No one has been arrested and no charges have been filed at this time, but police continue to investigate the matter. Police have not released any names involved in the incident.
Hosey said around 10 a.m. Thursday, an additional social media post came to the police department’s attention that involved a threat at the school. Law enforcement and school administrators placed the school on code yellow lockdown.
Principal Kelly Withers issued a ConnectEd message to parents saying that “an arranged altercation involving South Rowan High students occurred last night.” She explained the altercation happened off campus.
Code yellow lockdown means all doors to the school are locked and secured, students can’t leave the building and outside activities cease, but classes continue.
Parents can enter the building during a code yellow lockdown, but the building is locked as they enter and leave.
Police have identified the person who made the post and say they are familiar with that person as well as several others who were associated with the post.
“Investigators do not believe this to be a credible threat,” Hosey said in the statement.
