Area Sports Briefs: Second round of playoffs on Friday

Four Rowan County teams are in the second round of the state playoffs on Friday.
2A soccer
Tenth-seeded Salisbury is at No. 7 Shelby at 6 p.m.
Shelby’s girls (15-4-1) steamrolled West Wilkes 6-0 in the first round.
Shelby has won 10 of its last 11 games.
Salisbury (15-2-1) is ranked 12th in 2A by EuroScoreboard. The Hornets won 4-0 against R-S Central in the first round.
Sophomores Ceci Cardelle and Katie Bullock and freshman Julia Honeycutt are among the standouts for the Hornets.
3A softball
No. 5 West Rowan hosts No. 12 Ledford at 5 p.m.
Ledford (17-7) won 6-3 against Carson in the first round of the playoffs.
Ledford has won six of its last seven games and scores a lot of runs. Destiny DeBerry and Mason Hedgecock have swung hot bats for the Panthers.
Shortstop Hunter Gibbons and pitcher Peyton Greene are batting over .500 for SPC champ West Rowan (18-5).
West Rowan beat SPC rival Cox Mill 8-2 in the first round.
3A baseball
No. 4 West Rowan is at home against No. 20 Patton at 6:30 p.m.
Morganton Patton (12-11) pounded Cox Mill 10-0 to reach the second round.
Ben Buff is the big hitter for Patton. He’s batting close to .400 with 25 RBIs.
SPC champ West Rowan (18-6) will count on Bryan Ketchie and/or Austin Love on the mound.
The Falcons are only batting .255 as a team, but they also have a team ERA of 1.91. Outfielder Harrison Baucom (.364) has been the leading hitter for the Falcons.
West Rowan won 9-1 against Hickory in the first round.
3A baseball
No. 15 Carson is on the road at No. 2 Lawndale Burns at 7 p.m.
Burns (20-3) went 15-1 in league play and won 5-4 against Kings Mountain in the first round. Burns has won 11 in a row since losing to South Point on April 7.
Carson (17-9) won 1-0 against Enka in the first round behind Owen White’s one-hitter.
The Cougars likely will turn to Kris Peacock (3-0) on the mound, with Tanner Christy and Heath Mitchem available.
Mitchem, the first baseman, and outfielder Michael Morrison lead Carson’s offense.
Prep tennis
Dual team state championships will be decided Saturday in Burlington.
Class 1A: Raleigh Charter (10-0) vs. Mooresville Pine Lake Prep (12-1), 12:30 pm
Class 2A: Brevard (16-0) vs. Carrboro (13-1), 9:30 a.m.
Class 3A: Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons (22-4) vs. Waxhaw Marvin Ridge (17-0), 12:30 pm
Class 4A: Raleigh Wakefield (20-0) vs. Greensboro Page (14-1)
College golf
UNC Greensboro’s Roy Dixo (Salisbury) was selected for the Capital One Academic All-District III at-large first team.
Dixon is now eligible for Academic All-America honors against other first team selections across the eight districts nationwide. This marks the second season that Dixon has earned the prestigious honor.
Dixon owns a 3.97 grade point average in finance and graduated earlier this month as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He will continue his studies in the fall at the University of North Carolina Law School.
Dixon was named first team All-Southern Conference for the second straight year after posting a 72.90 stroke average. He is the sixth UNCG golfer in program history to earn all-conference accolades in back-to-back seasons.

Salisbury Parks and Recreation announces its summer sports camps and athletic leagues.

Legion baseball
Mocksville announced the cancellation of early American Legion games with Winston-Salem (May 17, home) and South Rowan (May 19, road).
Mid. school soccer
Southeast’s boys defeated Mooresville 4-0 to win the Rowan County Middle School Conference Tournament.
Southeast finished 15-0.
Scoring for Southeast were Lupe Bautista, Edwing Sanchez, Tony Figueroa and Edgar Estrada.
Assists were by Estrada and Kevin Vasquez. Fernando Guerrero ended the season with another shutout. Alex Ortiz, Alex Mercado, Oscar Nunez, Alex Erazo, Dylan Mills and Brandon Ibanez led the defense.
