Police say a domestic situation could have been worse at an Independence Drive home after bullets were shot through a neighbor’s home.

Salisbury Police charged Kevin Keith Atkinson, 25, of 125 Independence Drive, with felony discharging a firearm into occupied property and felony altering or destroying/removing identifying marks on personal property.

Officers were called Thursday night to 130 Independence Drive where two children ducked for cover after shots were fired into their home. The children called their father who then left work and called police from the home.

Police discovered a domestic situation occurred between Atkinson and his girlfriend and he fired shots that sent bullets flying into the neighbor’s home. No one was hurt and the girlfriend left before police arrived.

A relative in Atkinson’s home put the gun up for safety, said Police Capt. Shelia Lingle.

When police examined the gun, they saw the serial number had been scratched off. Lingle said they have technology that will help them lift the serial number even though it had been filed down. Police crime scene investigators will deploy that technique in this case, she said.

Atkinson has since been released from the Rowan County Detention Center under a $3,000 secured bond.
