Scramble for literacy brings out best

The Rowan County Literacy Council would like to thank all those who participated, volunteered and donated to our Annual Scrabble Scramble Fundraiser held April 21 at Trinity Oaks. The continued generosity of the community made this our best year ever.

Scrabble Scramble is the major fundraiser for the Rowan County Literacy Council. This enables us to purchase the materials the students need for their classes. This was the 12th year the Literacy Council has held this event.

Seven teams competed in three rounds of Scrabble. The winners of Scrabble Scramble 2015 were:  1st place — Trinity Oaks; 2nd place — YTL sponsored by The South Rowan YMCA Service Club; and 3rd place was The Mean Green Scrabble Machine sponsored by The Friends of the Library.

If you, or someone you know, would like to help make someone’s life better by giving them the “Gift of Literacy,” contact or come by the Rowan County Literacy Council located on the second floor of the Rowan Public Library.

Junior Civitans made great contribution

Kudos and a great big shout out to Junior Civitans! I am so proud of you!

The Junior Civitans recently held their district convention at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. During the convention, kindergarten readiness kits were assembled. The contents of the kits included books, glue, safety scissors and other age-appropriate educational materials. The kits are providing North Carolina pre-kindergarten children materials to assist with the transition into kindergarten.

The Junior Civitans spent the better part of a year collecting the kit items. Also, money was collected to purchase additional kit items.

The Arc of Rowan supports activities that promote early intervention of development disabilities. The kindergarten readiness kits are an excellent example containing great activities.  How thoughtful of the Junior Civitans to spend time and money for the kindergarten readiness kits.

Thank you Junior Civitans for caring about young children. Thank you Brandy Kegeris for your leadership as Junior Civitan governor. Thank you for taking the time to make the kindergarten readiness kits!
