Jeff Long: Wrongdoing, responsibility and a sacrifice

It seems like these days every problem gets passed around in search of someone or something to take the blame. No one wants to take responsibility for their part in any questionable act being bad or wrong. This isn’t a new concept but rather a very old one.
Let’s go back to the earliest times. God created man and woman, Gen. 1:27. “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male (Adam) and female (Eve) created He them.” It goes on and tells how He created them and about the garden (Eden) they were to tend (Gen. 2:15). He gave them but one rule (law), Gen. 2:16-17, “And the Lord commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil, thou shalt not eat of it: For in the day that thou eatest there of, thou shalt surely die.” They had a magnificent oasis filled with fruits, beauty and only one law (rule). Simple enough, right? Wrong; The serpent “groomed” Eve through trickery of words, tempting her to eat of the forbidden fruit, the only fruit told not to eat (Gen. 3:1-5). Gen. 3:6 tells that she did eat and also gave to Adam to eat as well. Wow, one rule and they broke it!
When God came to Eden looking for Adam and Eve (Gen. 3:8-9), they hid, for they knew of the wrong they had done. When God asked Adam if he ate the fruit, he blamed Eve (Gen. 3:12). When God inquired Eve about the fruit, she blamed the serpent (Gen. 3:13). So God punished all three of them, for they had all done wrong in His eyes (Gen. 3:14-19).
This knowledge of good and evil that Adam and Eve gained from eating the fruit, led to lots of sinful activities and ways. This in turn required more rules (laws). There are more than 600 commandments and laws in the Old Testament alone. I don’t use computers and/or the internet but I’d bet if you’d check, there’s probably hundreds of thousands if not millions of laws and rules in society today.
God knew we wouldn’t be able to obey all His commandments and laws so He sent His son, Jesus Christ (John 3:16), to show us how and give us an example to live by (1 Peter 2:21, John 6:38-40). he was crucified on a cross at Calvary (Luke 23:33) to allow our sins to be forgiven and buried causing us no more worries (1 John 1:7). He then was raised on the third day to lead the way for our salvation (John 3:3).
I hope you understand how much of a sacrifice this was. God’s image in flesh (Jesus Christ) gave his perfect life so that yours and my sinful lives could be remade new (reborn, sinless) and able to accept the Holy Spirit, who will guide us through this Earthly life and allows us to rise again as He did to our glorious eternal home (heaven), (John 5:24).
Hopefully you’ll take a few moments to thank God for this gift (Eph. 2:8), as well as accept it. There’s no cost to us, Jesus paid it for us. (1 Cor. 15:57) He only asks that you share this knowledge of salvation with others, so they can enjoy what we are and will be. I look forward to you joining me in heaven. God bless all!
