Area Sports Briefs: Intimidators add slugger but lose to Suns

Kannapolis lost at home to Hagerstown 8-4 on Tuesday in South Atlantic League baseball.
Newcomer Nick Delmonico’s first hit came via the long ball in the fourth inning to cut Hagerstown’s lead to 5-1.
Hagerstown grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Intimidators’ starter Yelmison Peralta, who struggled to find the strike zone.
Kannapolis plated three runs in the seventh to get within 6-4. Hunter Jones singled home a run, and Delmonico had a sac fly,
• The Intimidators made two roster moves Tuesday, receiving Delmonico from the Double-A Birmingham Barons disabled list and placing outfielder Michael Danner on the disabled list.
Delmonico, 23, is a former Baltimore Orioles and Milwaukee Brewers prospect who was signed by the White Sox in February .
Delmonico entered the 2013 season rated by Baseball America as the No. 4 Prospect in the Baltimore organization and was traded to Milwaukee on July 23, 2013, for Francisco Rodriguez.

American Legion
Rowan County hosts Mooresville in a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday at Newman Park that won’t count in the league standings.
Rowan County (9-4) will try to extend a seven-game winning streak.
Mooresville is 7-2 and is expected to be one of the better teams in Area III.
• Rowan has added a Friday game to the schedule against the HiToms Scarlets wood bat team.
Rowan hosts Davidson County in league play on Saturday.
• Kannapolis is scheduled to return to action Wednesday after a break.
Kannapolis hosts Randolph County.
• Southern Rowan is scheduled to return to action Thursday at Randolph County.

Junior Legion
Carson romped 12-0 against West Forsyth on Tuesday.
Andrew Jerman was the winning pitcher with relief help from Brycen Holshouser.
Ben Shoaf, Pearce Wilhelm and Luke Barringer led the Carson offense.
Local golf
The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played a team event on Tuesday.
The winning team was Susan Morris, Mary Seaford, Susan Wydner and Anne Saunders.
Second place went to the team of Beth Calhoun, Cathy Fleming, Carolynn Ries and Louise Collins.
• After a two-week hiatus, the eGolf Gateway Tour returns to action this week for the eighth annual Spring Creek Classic, set to be contested at award-winning Spring Creek Golf Club in Gordonsville, Va., on June 17-19.

East Diamond Sports
East Rowan Diamond Sports is hosting the Area 3 9U baseball tournament this week and the 8U state tournament next week.
East Rowan’s 8U all -stars begin play in the WNC Cal Ripken Area 3 tournament Thursday at 6 p.m. against Surry County North in Yadkinville.
Team members are Harrison Ailshie, Cooper Doty, Tyler Hill, Gavin Hopkins, Nolan Kirkpatrick, Colton Lackey, Evan Misenheimer, Braden Mulkey, Mason Phelps, Aiden Shull, Keaton Walker and Maverick Walters.
The head coach is Greg Shull.
East Rowan’s 9U all- stars begin play Thursday in the Area 3 tournament against China Grove at 6 p.m. in Rockwell.
East Rowan will host the Area 3 tournament Thursday through Sunday at Rockwell Elementary.
Team members are Logan Dyer, Jaden Sprinkle, Nathan Hayworth, Morgan Padgett, Joseph Burleyson, McCall Henderson, Aiden Michael, Braeden Shive, Gannon Kepley, Elly Davis, Joseph Vitrano and Cole Poplin.
The head coach is Chuck Hayworth.

Girls basketball camps:
July 20-23, 9:00 am until 12:00 – rising kindergarten through 4th grade girls
July 27-30, 9:00 am until 12:00 – rising fifth through eighth grade girls
Cost is $60 each camp – includes camper insurance and a T-shirt.
