UPDATE: Rowan authorities have located a woman who tried to give her baby to a stranger at Love’s Travel Stop earlier this morning.

The woman and the infant were safely located around 10:36 a.m. at Catawba College, officials confirmed.

The infant is reported to be in good condition with no problems, and the female will be evaluated by medical personnel, said Rowan County Sheriff’s Capt. John Sifford.

The female in this incident is reported to have entered the Administration building at Catawba College this morning. The woman did have the infant with her and inquired about wanting to join the U.S. Armed Services.

Personnel at Catawba College contacted 911 immediately, due to the strange behavior of the female, and emergency services responded to that location along with law enforcement, Sifford said.

The infant will be cared for by Rowan Social Services until family members can arrive to take custody of the child.

Rowan authorities were looking for a woman who they believe tried to give her baby to a stranger while at Love’s Travel Stop earlier this morning. She has since been located at Catawba College, according to emergency communications.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office says the white female was at the store location, 1105 Peeler Road, around 9:05 a.m. and witnesses told officials the woman seemed impaired. Officers arrived within five minutes of being dispatched, but the woman had already left the area.

Deputies determined the woman was driving a Volkswagen Jetta, red in color, with a SC license tag of KIM170.  She was described as a white female, in her early 20s with blond hair. She was wearing blue jeans and shirt with flowers.

The sheriff’s office initiated a statewide be on the look out for the vehicle and requested that the vehicle be stopped to check the welfare of the woman and the infant. Deputies also asked Horry County, South Carolina officers to go by the address connected to the SC tag that was on the vehicle. However, South Carolina authorities only found a vacant apartment at the address associated with the vehicle.

Witnesses interview said the woman never actually asked anyone to take her baby, but did infer that she needed to make some changes in her life, which led the witnesses to believe she wanted someone to take the child.

Anyone making contact with the red Volkswagen Jetta, with the SC tag of KIM170, is asked to contact their local law enforcement agency immediately, so that they may be dispatched to check the welfare of both the female and child.
