Washington and Lee University graduate

Alee Sharp Johnson of Salisbury graduated cum laude with a degree in studio art and English from Washington and Lee University on May 28. Commencement ceremonies for 454 Washington and Lee seniors were held on the university’s historic Front Lawn.
Mars Hill University dean’s list

Wofford College dean’s list

Dr. Dennis M. Wiseman, provost of Wofford College, has announced dean’s list students for the spring 2015 semester, which includes the following local students: Caden William Hayes of Mooresville and Stacey Maguire Mangan of China Grove.

To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must be enrolled for at least 12 semester hours of graded courses and attain a semester grade point average of 3.6 or higher.

 

Furman University dean’s list

The following Furman University  students are included on the dean’s list for the 2015 spring semester. Furman’s dean’s list is composed of full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade point average of 3.4 or higher on a four-point system.

Nelson awarded Fulbright grant

Amanda Nelson of Salisbury is one of six Virginia Tech students or alumnae to be awarded U.S. Fulbright Student Program grants. During the 2015-16 academic year, the recipients will conduct research, study, or teach abroad.

Nelson is a doctoral candidate in chemistry in Virginia Tech’s College of Science. She will be spending almost a year conducting research in synthetic chemistry at the University of Würzburg in Germany.

Nelson’s research aims to understand and improve approaches to synthetic chemistry. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

East Tennessee State University names Carter Scholarship recipients

East Tennessee State University has selected the recipients of the first George L. Carter Scholarships for out-of-state students.

Carter Scholarships are awarded to new transfer students and freshmen who live out of state but within a 250-mile radius of the university. The awards of $15,000 per year are renewable for four years.

Kathryn Clontz, daughter of Kelly and Millette Clontz will major in biology. She is a graduate of South Iredell High School, a member of Troutman Baptist Church and an intern at the Animal Hospital of Statesville and N.C. Research Station. An officer in the South Iredell Future Farmers of America chapter, she is a member of the Iredell County and N.C. Cattlemen’s Association and the recipient of the Perry and Doris Teeter Beef Leadership Scholarship.

Daniel Thrailkill, lead singer and guitarist for the Back Creek Bluegrass Boys, will enter the university’s Bluegrass, Old Time and Country Music program. A graduate of Covenant Academy, he is a member of Back Creek Presbyterian Church, the Rowan Singers, LEAD service group and the Blackstone Mock Trial Team, as well as a volunteer for Rowan Helping Ministries West, a nursing home and homebound music ministry. He is the son of Bill and Angela Thrailkill of Mount Ulla.
