I have written columns about beards, being left handed, and basswood trees covered with honeybees. Now you are going to get my take on the color of your eyes. Most of you know that I don’t really know any real facts about any of these topics, but if you keep reading my columns, you must enjoy my nonsense. Be aware there is always an element of fact and truth to these ramblings before you discredit the words completely.

We are told by songwriters what we see and feel with our eyes. There is an expression that “eyes are the window to the soul.” Some say that looking through our eyes you get the best view of our brains. We fall in love looking into the eyes of our loved ones. We see the world through our eyes from our own perspectives.

Frankie Valli sings, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” Crystal Gayle tells us, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.” What about Van Morrison belting out, “Brown Eyed Girl?”

I’m told there are 36,009 songs that mention our eyes. I don’t know about that number. Who in their right mind would sit around and count all the songs that mention eyes. As an attorney might say, “Let’s agree there are a lot of songs that mention eyes.”

We’ve got “Wild Eyes,” “Fish Eyes,” “X-Ray Eyes,” “Sad Eyes,” “Green Eyes,” “For Your Eyes Only,” “Renaissance Eyes,” “My Lonely Sad Eyes,” “Tears in Your Eyes,” “All Eyes,” “Nice Rotting Eyes,” “Rat’s Eyes,” “Rainbow Eyes,” “Pale Blue Eyes,” “Eyes Wide Open,” “Real Eyes,” “Sexy Eyes,” “Killer Eyes,” “The Night Has a Thousand Eyes,” “Them There Eyes,” “Bloodshot Eyes,” and “Phony Eyes” as examples.

I’m not writing about eye bags, red eyes, puffy eyes, cat-eye marbles, angel eyes, or pretty little blue eyes. I won’t mention animal eyes that glow in the dark when your car headlights shine on them.

Readers, today we will discuss your eye color and your personalities. This sounds medical, so I will base my ramblings on a number of very serious research projects on the topic by very serious scientists. One of the studies was conducted at Orebro University in Sweden and another at Edinburgh University. Dr. Anthony Fallone said, “The eye is so closely linked neurologically to the brain that you might call it the only part of our brain you can see from the outside.”

Dark brown or black eyes might indicate that you are a leader or are mysterious or secretive. Brown eyes are the most common in the U.S. (34 percent). You might be attractive or adorable, friendly, or polite. You can make people laugh. You might love nature, be strong-headed and spiritual. You might be very good in fast-paced sports like hitting a ball or tennis that takes split second timing. Maybe your reflexes are very quick and you react fast. You might like to prove your worth to others and are optimistic, gentle and loyal to your friends. You might require two hours less sleep at night compared to people with lighter eyes.

Blue eyes are desirable and thought to be youthful. You might form long-lasting relationships. People see blue eyes as being pretty, peaceful, kind and smart. Maybe you are a “strategic thinker,” a good planner. You might have great inner strength and physical strength. Some might think you are weak or timid, but competitive. Your best sports might be golf or slow- moving sports that require planning rather than fast reaction.

Gray eyes are the rarest eye color. Gray eyes might just be a light shade of blue eyes. These folks are either well-balanced or you might have a “two-sided” personality. Maybe you are wise and gentle and not very aggressive. You are sensitive and flexible with analytical thinking and are very rational.

Hazel eyes are harder to pigeonhole since sometimes your eyes look green and sometimes brown. Hazel eyes are unique. Maybe you are elegant, independent, and courageous. You like trying new things. People with hazel eyes often have digestive problems.

Green-eyed people are sexy and mysterious. You are self-sufficient with a bit of a mystery. You don’t get mad very fast, but you are unpredictable. You are creative and deal with pressure very well. You have original thoughts and are curious and intelligent. You are full of life and enjoy living. However, you might be jealous.

Now here comes the disclaimer. Your eye color is basically determined from the genetics that you inherit. People with black or dark brown eyes usually are Native American, African American, Hispanic, or Asian. People with hazel, gray, green or blue eyes come from European ancestors. Some of your personality traits might be a cultural influence rather than eye color. People in some cultures, for example, are more agreeable than in other cultures.

The color of your eyes is part of your individuality as well as your inherited traits. Brown eyes are the most common, followed by blue and then green.

Always remember: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye”
