Two teens were issued citations after authorities warned a group of teens and others against jumping from the Tuckertown Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office cited Michael Paul Whitaker, 19, and his brother Erik Dshane Whitaker, 16, with impeding traffic/standing in the highway.

A report said a deputy went to 17318 Stokes Ferry Road around 12:30 p.m. to warn people there were laws that prohibit anyone from being on the bridge and jumping from the bridge. Authorities spoke to several people who were there to have a picnic in the park and were swimming.

Deputies stayed in the area for 30 minutes and returned about four hours later to find a crowd on the Tuckertown Bridge. The two brothers were standing in the roadway impeding traffic, the report said.

The officer noted there is only a one-foot clearance between the white line and the guard rail. The officer said the two boys were at the lake with their mother. They were given the citations and released to their mother.

Rowan Sheriff’s Capt. John Sifford said authorities have warned people for years about jumping off the Tuckertown Bridge. He estimates the the drop into the water to be about 10 yards.
