Following a death earlier this year, the Rowan Soil and Water Conservation District is accepting applications to fill a vacant position on the agency’s board of supervisors.

Shortly after being elected in 2014 to a term on the conservation district’s board of supervisors, China Grove native Harry Corriher II died. Corriher, who died on March 24, worked in the Rowan County Schools for 34 years as a teacher, principal and transportation coordinate. He also farmed land just outside of the town limits of China Grove.

Christopher Sloop, a resource conservationist for the conservation district, said Corriher implemented many of the best conservation practices before ever being on the conservation district’s board of supervisors.

“A couple short months after being sworn in, we were shocked and saddened by his unexpected death,” Sloop said.

Three months after Corriher’s passing, the conservation district looks to fill the unexpired term, which ends in 2018.

The board of supervisors oversee the Rowan Soil and Water Conservation District and administers various programs to landowners in the county.

An application developed for the position states applicants must have a “sense of public service, the desire to improve and protect water quality and natural resources for Rowan County and North Carolina over a range of land uses, be a resident of Rowan County and be eligible to vote in the State of North Carolina.”

Sloop said the board of supervisors would interview applicants until the right person is found. He said no particular deadline has been determined.

Those interested can pick up applicants at the conservation district office at 2727-C Old Concord Road in Salisbury or call 702-216-8999. Applicants can also email rowanswcd@gmail.com
