Area Sports Briefs: Intimidators lose; Carson , West Jr. teams advance

The Augusta GreenJackets scored six runs in the second inning and beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 7-3 on Sunday at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The Intimidators (4-7 second half, 39-41) managed only one hit after the third inning.
GreenJackets starter Mark Reyes tossed six innings and limited Kannapolis to two earned runs.
John Ziznewski drove in two runs for the Intimidators. Eddy Alvarez had three hits and stole his 37th base.
Kannapolis continues a nine-game road trip at Augusta on Monday.

Junior Legion
Carson’s Junior Legion team won 3-2 at West Forsyth on Sunday to sweep a best-of-three, first-round series.
Cameron Prugh pitched a complete game, struck out six and allowed one earned run.
Pearce Wilhelm had three hits and two RBIs. He had a game-tying double in the seventh as Carson rallied from a 2-1 deficit.
Ben Shoaf scored two runs and stole two bases. His walk and steal started the winning rally.
Chase Earnhardt scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
• West Rowan beat Kernersville 9-5 on Sunday to sweep a best-of-three, first-round playoff series.
Brandon Walton had three hits and two RBIs. Brett Graham had two hits and two RBIs.
Olen Stamper and Dillon Simpson had two hits each. Graham and Stamper had doubles. Cole Hales was the winning pitcher.
West Rowan plays at Carson at 7 on Wednesday.

Rowan Little League
The Rowan Little League 12U softball team captured the District 2 Championship by defeating defending state champion East Surry 6-2.
Rowan’s girls went 4-0 in district play by defeating NW Forsyth 23-0, Davie LL 12-1 and East Surry 19-2 before their victory in the final game. Rowan will travel to Washington, N.C., to begin state tournament play on July 18.
Rowan Little League made it a clean sweep in District 2 softball by winning at the 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U levels.
The 8U team, defending state champs, will be playing at Franklin on July 11.
The 10U team will be traveling to Wilmington on July 11 to defend their state championship.
The 14U team will be playing in Sylva and is looking for its first state championship.

Local golf
The McCanless Couples played Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The first-place team was Ricky & Treva Honeycutt and Tim Earnhardt.
The second-place team was Austin, Alex and Erick Miller.
Alex Miller won closest to the pin and longest putt.

Parks and Rec
Salisbury Parks and Recreation is accepting registration for teams interested in a coed adult softball league.
The coaches meeting is Thursday, July 9, at 6 p.m. at Hall Gym.

The Rowan Express Track and Field Club competed in the Area 25 Region Meet in Charlotte.
Top-five finishers in field events advanced to the AAU Junior Olympics Nationals at Norfolk State on July 31-Aug. 8.

Girls basketball camps:
July 20-23, 9:00 am until 12:00 – rising kindergarten through 4th grade girls
July 27-30, 9:00 am until 12:00 – rising fifth through eighth grade girls
Cost is $60 for each camp and includes camper insurance and a T-shirt.
