Residents at Lakewood apartments got a rude awakening Sunday morning when police say James Dean Shehan, 32, attempted to break into two separate units.

A resident was out walking his dog at 1:30 a.m. when he told Salisbury Police he saw Shehan walking towards him with clenched fists. The man went back into his home and then reported hearing pounding and breaking glass. Shehan allegedly tried to break into unit 702, which was empty at the time, by breaking the window, police said. According to the report, after an unsuccessful attempt to enter the unit, he went down to unit 705, and tried to break down the door.

The resident who lived there reported that he broke her door screen and tried to force his way inside. She told police that she grabbed a cane from behind the door and used it to push him back out until she was able to shut and lock the door. Shehan then allegedly began trying to punch out her window.

According to the report, Shehan was still trying to break 705’s window when police arrived. Police reported that he would not comply with any instructions. The arresting officer reported that Shehan was intoxicated.

Shehan was arrested and charged with breaking and entering, willful and wanton injury to real property, and resist, delay or obstructing an officer. He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $2,500 secured bond. Shehan has previously been charged in Rowan County with assault on a female.
