Bethel UMC spaghetti dinner

MOCKSVILLE —Bethel United Methodist Church, 353 Bethel Church Road, will host a benefit dinner for Megan Owens on Tuesday, Nov. 10 from 4-7 p.m. . Dinner includes spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread, salad, homemade cobblers, tea and coffee. All donations will go to help offset Megan’s medical expenses as she fights Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The Rev. Tony Owens is host pastor.

 

Veteran appreciation services

Erwin Temple CME 

The annual veterans appreciation service will be held at Erwin Temple CME Church at 3 p.m. Sunday. This is to show honor and appreciation to those who have served or are currently serving in any branch of the US Military. Guest speaker will the Rev. John R. Bankhead Jr. He served 10 years in the US Army, earning numerous awards and was a staff sergeant. He currently serves as an associate minister at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Spencer under the leadership of the Rev. David Bracken. Lunch will be served from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Music and gospel singing will be provided by guest groups during the afternoon. The Rev. Ervin L. Hannah Jr. is host pastor.

Word of Life 

Word of Life Family Worship Center, 726 E. Liberty St., will have its annual veteran’s recognition Service on Sunday during the 10 a.m. service. Veterans and active duty members of the military will be recognized for their service to the country. Pastor Dr. Martha Starks will deliver words of encouragement to the veterans and family members of those who are no longer with us. First Calvary Baptist 

First Calvary Baptist Church, 400 S. Long St., will observe Veterans Day at the 11 a.m. service on Sunday with speaker the Rev. Dr. Fleming Otey, retired chaplain at the VA Medical Center. Rev. Dr. Otey, who is from a family of ministers, teachers and community leaders, has served as a chaplain, military officer, community developer and family advocate for more than 55 years. Locally, Dr. Otey has served as president emeritus of the Salisbury Rowan Interdenominational Ministers Association and the United Ministerial Alliance. He has chaired the Let’s Get Connected Day for the Mayor’s Human Relations Covenant Community Connections Subcommittee, continues to support the Veterans Homeless Transition Program and serves as a volunteer chaplain at Novant Rowan Medical Center. Dr. Otey is a member of the Military Officers Association, the VFW, the American Legion and the Disabled Veterans of America. The Rev. Leamon E. Brown is host pastor.

‘Godspell’ songs at First Presbyterian Salisbury

Traditional services at First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury are held in the sanctuary at 8:30 and 11 a.m. During the contemporary Life Center Worship, the cast of Catawba’s production of “Godspell” will help to lead the service, performing two songs from the musical, Day by Day and Blessed the Lord. Host pastor is Dr. Jim C. Dunkin.

The Noblemen perform at Unity

The Noblemen Southern Gospel Quartet from the Chattanooga, Tenn. area will perform at Unity Presbyterian Church, 885 Woodleaf-Barber Road, on Sunday at 10 a.m. The group’s mission is simply, “Spread the good news of Jesus Christ through song.” A love offering will be taken, and a covered dish lunch will follow the performance. Mt. Vernon celebrates 145 years 

WOODLEAF — The members of Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church located on Carson Road will observe the 145th church anniversary on Sunday at 11 a.m. on the theme of “The Mt. Vernon Journey 1870 – 2015….A Work in Progress.” The first church was built in 1870 with John Marlin Sr. as carpenter. The current church structure was started in 1890 under the pastorate of The Rev. Crawford. The land upon which the building stands was purchased for $4. The Rev. Juan Guthrie, pastor of Sargent Memorial Presbyterian in Washington, D.C., will preach the anniversary sermon. Musical selections will be rendered by Sargent Memorial Gospel-Aires choir. Rev. Guthrie holds a degree in business administration from NC Central University and a master of divinity degree from Johnson C. Smith Seminary Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Ga. He served as an intern at St. James Pres. Church in Greensboro and Westminister Pres. Church in Laurinburg. Lunch will be served following the service in the fellowship hall. Dr. Emery Rann is host pastor.

Yuth lead at Mt. Zion UCC

CHINA GROVE — During the 11 a.m. service at Mt. Zion UCC, 1415 South Main St., the Youth will lead the morning service on the topic of David and Goliath. In addition, the Mt. Miller, former pastor and currently Presiding Elder of the Winston-Salem District, will bring the message at the 11 a.m. service. Lunch will be served. The Rev. Dr. George Banks, pastor of Goler Memorial AME Zion Church in Winston-Salem will bring the 3 p.m. message. The church will honor members that are age 80 and over for their service to the church. Free Thanksgiving meals to those in need on Thanksgiving Day, including dine-in, carry-out and delivery services. Providence Baptist will also distribute free winter coats to those in need.
