The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office reported Saturday that phone scammers are posing as law enforcement officers. Numerous Cabarrus County residents have received phone calls from someone claiming to be a Cabarrus County Sheriff’s deputy. The scammer tells the victim that he or she failed to appear for jury duty and must pay a fine or risk being arrested. Victims are instructed to purchase a pre-paid card in order to cover the fines.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office reports that they do not accept pre-paid debit cards as a valid method of payment for court fines. The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office requests that anyone who receives these calls not send the money and not call the number back. According to the report, they are working to identify the suspect. If you believe you are a victim of this scam, please call the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office at 704-920-3000. You can call anonymously with Cabarrus County Crime Stoppers at 704-93-CRIME or 704-932-7463.
