Butterball 5K another big hit with local runners

The big winners on Thanksgiving morning at the Forum were surprises to no one. Bob Marchinko, Carson High School cross country coach and regular winner in Rowan races over the years, came out of semi-retirement to show that he certainly still has it. Marchinko topped the rest of the field with a time of 16 minutes and 46 seconds. Adam Cornelius was second with a time of 17:12 and Robert Miller tallied a close third in 17:35.
The top female runner was Mary Dudley Tramazzo, possibly the most gifted runner who once called Salisbury home. Currently a military wife whose husband is based at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C., Tramazzo returns home every other Thanksgiving and once again dominated the competition. Her winning time was 18 minutes and 48 seconds. Kelly Lowman was second in 20 minutes and 18 seconds with Karla Steedley taking third in 21:33.
More than 250 runners finished the Eighth Annual Butterball 5K on a picture-perfect morning for running. Veteran race director Rayna Gardner said, “To all of Rowan County and holiday visitors, you’ve done it again! What a great turnout for our eighth year! We couldn’t be happier for all the support shown for the Prevent Child Abuse Rowan and the Terrie Hess House. This event wouldn’t get off the ground without our sponsors, Speedway, Novant Health, Gerry Wood Auto, Shulenburger Surveying, Caniche, First Bank, GNC, Chamberlain Exterminators, Fowler Physical Therapy, Koco Java and Blast It All. Thanks to the Salisbury Police Department for keeping everyone safe.”
