Area Sports Briefs: Catawba’s Kitchens named All-American

Catawba sophomore linebacker, Kyle Kitchens has been named a Division II All-American by the American Football Coaches Association .
The 25-man team was announced on Thursday.
Kitchens (6-2, 205) recorded 13 sacks, the second-highest single season total at Catawba behind DeVonte Peterson’s 14.5.
Kitchens led the South Atlantic Conference in sacks. He totaled 23 stops for loss among his 65 tackles on the year. He forced two fumbles and had three fumble recoveries and returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown against Mars Hill.
Kitchens is Catawba’s first AFCA All-American since Terence Crosby in 2008 and is the 10th Catawba player to earn the honor from the AFCA. He’s one of three sophomores on the AFCA All-America team.

College football
South Carolina State defensive lineman Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) and North Carolina A&T offensive lineman Brandon Parker (A.L. Brown) were named to the BOXTOROW All-America team for HBCU football.
Livingstone’s Drew Powell was Honorable Mention.

North Hills hoops
The North Hills middle school boys won 59-27 on Thursday against Tri-City of Conover.
The Eagles (5-1) were led by Micah Chambers with 29 points and Chase Davidson with nine points and 12 assists.

North Hills defeated Carolina Christian 54-38 in Locust on Tuesday.
North Hills was led by Chambers with 22 points and Davidson with 14.

Jayvee basketball
Josiah Dixon scored 18 points and Tyrese Lawrence had 13 for West Rowan’s boys in a 46-39 win against Davie County on Wednesday.

8th-grade hoops
North Rowan won 50-46 against West Rowan on Thursday.
Chaz McCombs led North (6-2) with 24 points and Nasheed Tab added 13.
Quay Weeks led the Bulldogs with 12 points, and Jalen Houston and Jay Joseph had 10 each.
West will play Erwin on Monday.

College volleyball
Catawba’s Bri Howard has been named to the College Division All-State volleyball team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA). The team was announced on Wednesday.

College basketball
Davidson County Community College’s Tre Williams (Carson) had 12 points and six assists, while David Tripp (A.L. Brown) had eight points and seven rebounds in a 120-84 win against Elite Skills Basketball Academy.

Prep basketball
West Rowan and Davie will make up their postponed girls basketball game on Jan. 6 at 6 p.m. at West.
SPC matchups tonight include South Rowan at Carson; West Rowan at Central Cabarrus, and East Rowan at Northwest Cabarrus.
A.L. Brown hosts Vance in a MECKA game. Davie is at R.J. Reynolds for a CPC game. In non-conference games, North Rowan is at North Surry and Salisbury is at North Stanly.
