Two people were charged with animal cruelty Wednesday after Rowan County Animal Control filed earlier this month.
Amity Sequoyah Basinger, 24, and Ryan Lane Basinger, both of Rockwell, were charged with abandoning several dogs at their Earnhart Road home. The warrants state that the Basingers failed to provide drinkable water and safe food for the dogs “over an extended period of time.”
Six dogs are mentioned: a tan and white female chi chi, a red and white male pit bull, a tan and black male chi chi, a black and brown terrier, a brown and white female pit bull, a tan and black male pit bull. One dog, a brown and white pit bull, is listed as deceased, but it is unclear if this is the same female pit bull mentioned previously, or if the dog’s death was a result of the Basingers’ alleged abandonment.
The warrant does state that several of the dogs were in need of veterinary care “to prevent suffering” and allegedly did not receive it.
Both Amity and Ryan were charged with six counts of cruelty to animals. They have been placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $1,500 secured bond apiece. Neither have previous charges in North Carolina.
