Area Sports Briefs: Wike makes all-tourney team

Richmond’s Karleigh Wike (East Rowan) had her first college double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in a 54-46 win against Lafayette in the Cavalier Classic. She played 37 turnover-free minutes.
Wike also played well against Virginia (six points, six rebounds) in the championship game and made the all-tournament team.

Williams shines
Tre Williams (Carson) had 15 rebounds, nine points, five assists and three blocked shots on Sunday as Davidson County Community College won 102-74 against Charlotte’s Hines Prep.

Prep basketball
Salisbury’s DeShawn Troutman will enter tonight’s CCC opener at home against East Davidson with 997 career points.
The SHS boys program has produced nine 1,000-point scorers, including current head coach Bryan Withers.
The most recent to reach 1,000 was Darien Rankin in 2011.

Lexington is hosting North Rowan tonight, a matchup that has produced titanic boys games in recent years.
Both schools have gone 9-1 in the CCC the last two seasons, splitting with each other and sharing league titles.

The SPC also returns to action tonight.
Cox Mill is at West Rowan. Hickory Ridge is at Carson. Central Cabarrus at East Rowan.
Wendell Moore Jr. , ranked as one of the nation’s top freshmen, will be in action for Cox Mill’s boys.
Hickory Ridge’s well-balanced girls are in first place in the SPC.

D-II basketball
Lenoir-Rhyne guard Keenan Palmore has been named South Atlantic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Palmore, a senior from Stone Mountain, Ga., posted his third triple-double of the year as he finished with 22 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds in a 94-68 win over Belmont Abbey on Jan. 2.

Augusta’s Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) was named the PBC Player of the Week after averaging 26.0 points in two games.
Sherrill scored another 26 in Monday’s 75-74 win against Francis Marion.

The Salisbury Parks and Recreation is accepting registration for a girls basketball league (ages 7-15) and a coed basketball league (ages 5-6).

VT tops Va., 70-68
BLACKSBURG, Va. — Zach LeDay of Virginia Tech scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half and blocked London Perrantes’ attempt to tie the game in the final seconds.
The Hokies (10-5, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) got 16 points from Justin Bibbs and 13 from Seth Allen in ending a seven-game losing streak against their in-state rivals.
Perrantes hit six 3-pointers in the second half and led Virginia (12-2, 1-1) with 22 points, but LeDay swatted his driving layup in the final seconds, preserving Virginia Tech’s slim margin.
Anthony Gill added 17 points for Virginia, which outrebounded the Hokies and shot better, but had 16 turnovers that led to 26 points for Virginia Tech.
