Area Sports Briefs: Indians lose baseball opener

Catawba’s baseball team lost 12-7 at Barry on Friday.
The Buccaneers scored runs in each of the first six innings in topping the second-ranked Indians.
Will Albertson hit a two-run homer in the third inning for the Indians. Jake Kimble had a run-scoring double.
Kyle Smith had four hits for the Indians. Albertson had three hits. Austin Stilley walked four times.
Sean Grant took the loss for Catawba. Connor Johnson, Riley Myers, Ryan Kahny and Clay Young pitched in relief.
The Indians return to the diamond today, taking on 20th-ranked Lynn at 1 pm.

Prep swimming
Salisbury’s girls won their third straight conference championship on Thursday at the Hurley YMCA.
Salisbury scored 160 points. Lexington was second with 122.
Kathryn Morrison won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, while Amelia Steinman won the 50 and 100 freestyle races.
Callie Alexander won the 100 breaststroke. Michaela Lemmon won the 200 IM.
The Hornets also took two of the three relays, with Sharmi Amin, Alexander, Morrison and Steinman winning the 200 medley relay and Lemmon, Amin, Steinman and Morrison winning the 400 freestyle relay.

Salisbury and West Davidson shared the CCC championship on Thursday, battling to a deadlock with 150 points each.
Ethan Knorr won the 200 IM and 500 freestyle for the Hornets. Roarke Burton won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Matt Woolly won the 200 freestyle.
The Hornets also won the 400 freestyle, with Knorr, Woolly and Burton joined by Ryan Lasker.
Salisbury won the title last season.

College hoops
Catawba hosts Mars Hill in a SAC doubleheader this afternoon, starting at 2 p.m.
Livingstone is home for a CIAA doubleheader against Winston-Salem State.

Pfeiffer’s women lost 65-56 at Erskine on Friday. Meg Pritchard scored 17 points for the Falcons.

Prep hoops
Laura McManimen had 13 points for Hickory Ridge in a 62-23 win against Robinson. Gabby Smith scored 12.

Scott Hughes scored 19 points to lead West Davidson’s boys to a 70-62 CCC win against Thomasville on Friday.

Prep wrestling
A.L. Brown has clinched its second straight MECKA championship.

Salisbury won against North Rowan on Friday and took third place in the CCC with a 3-2 record.

Jayvee boys
West Rowan won 50-45 against Carson on Thursday.
Josiah Dixon scored 13 points and Tyrese Lawrence had 12 to lead the Falcons.
Lawrence made a game-winning shot on Friday to give West a victory against Central Cabarrus.

Jayvee girls
Carson won 23-17 against South Rowan on Friday to stay undefeated.
Tayler Harwood scored eight points for the Cougars. Montana Gurganious had six, and Shaleah Jolly had five.
Defensive standouts were Katie Jewell, Nancy Gamewell and Sarah Christie.
Olivia O’Kelly scored four points for South.

7th-grade hoops
Erwin’s girls won 31-9 against West Rowan.
Leading scorers for Erwin were Carleigh Perry with 12 points and Colbie Perry with 11.

Hurricanes
The Lady Rowan Hurricanes AAU basketball 6th-7th grade team will have its last tryout at 1 p.m. today at Knox Middle School.

Rowan Little League
Rowan Little League announced on Friday that it will be hosting the Southeast Regional softball tournament for several age groups.

Rowan Little League baseball and softball Registrations are from 9-3 today, Feb. 6 and Feb. 13 at Godley’s Garden Center on Statesville Boulevard.
Parents can also register online anytime at http://www.rowanlittleleague.com.
New this year is girls TBall softball for (ages 4-6). Age is as of Aug. 31, 2016.
Baseball Cost is $75 for all leagues: T-ball (ages 4-6), Coach Pitch (ages 7-8),
B (ages 9-10), A (ages 11-12) 50/70 (ages 11-13) and 13-16’s. League age is as of Aug. 31, 2016.
Softball Cost is $75 for all leagues: Girls 6U TBall Softball, 8U Coach Pitch (ages 6-8) 10U (ages 9-10), 12U (ages 11-12), 14U (ages 13-14). League age is as of Dec. 31, 2015.

Hendo’s Hope
There’s an upcoming event at North Rowan High School called Hendo’s Hope.
Hendo’s Hope Healthy Heart Fair is Saturday, Feb. 6, from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
This is a project Henderson Lentz, a Junior at North, is putting together to spread CPR/AED Awareness. Henderson (Hendo) suffered Sudden Cardiac Arrest while playing basketball last June 16, at Catawba Team Camp.
He was successfully resuscitated by CPR and one shock from an AED.
The event will have booths focused on and all about healthy hearts and will feature several hands-on opportunities.
Following the health fair, there will be a Basketball Shooting Contest.
Hendo’s Hope is sponsored by the North Rowan High Student Council and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club.
During the event, the Student Council and the FCA will be kicking off the Hendo’s Hope Fundraiser that will continue throughout the month of February.
The goal is to raise $1,500-$2,000 to purchase an AED for North Rowan’s Freshman Hall in honor of Hendo’s Lifesaving Team.
Tickets cost $.25- $1.00 for the guessing jars and raffles. Additional items will be available for silent auction. The community is invited to attend.
