Area Sports Briefs: Salisbury’s Morrison 2nd in 2 events at states

In Saturday’s 1A/2A Swimming Championships in Cary, Salisbury sophomore Kathryn Morrison had second-place finishes in the 100 butterfly (55.27 seconds) and 100 backstroke (58.08).
Salisbury’s girls finished 12th.
Amelia Steinman was 13th in the 50 free (26.33) and 15th in the 100 free (58.08). Callie Alexander was 19th in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.01). Salisbury’s 400 free relay team was ninth in 3:59.79.

Salisbury’s boys finished 14th. Ethan Knorr placed third in the 500 free (4:44.98) and eighth in the 200 IM (2:01.53).
Salisbury’s boys 400 relay team was 11th in 3:36.81. Matt Woolly was 13th in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.92). Roarke Burton was 15th in the 100 free (52.68) and 21st in the 100 backstroke (1:03.26).

In the 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships, South Rowan’s Madyson Campbell placed sixth in 1-meter diving.
South’s boys 200 medley relay team was 24th in 1:54.40. South’s Andrew Perry was 22nd in the 500 in 5:42.47. South’s Stetson Johnson was 18th in the 100 backstroke in 59.93 seconds.
East’s Chance Brown was 24th in the 200 freestyle in 2:04.88.

Carson’s Brynne Hardman was 19th in the girls 200 IM in 2:22.95. She was 22nd in the 100 butterfly in 1:05.84. Carson’s girls 200 free relay team was 23rd.
Track and field
In Saturday’s 1A/2A Indoor Track State Championships in Winston-Salem, North Rowan’s Chevy Blaire was second in the girls shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 3 inches.
North’s Meliya Parker was seventh in the 55 hurdles in 9.19 seconds.

Senior Michael Streater paced North’s boys. He was third in the high jump (6-0) and ninth in the 300 (37.77).
North’s 4×200 relay team of Streater, Stanley Bailey, Gregory Crawford and A’ Jon Jones was fifth in 1:36.73.

Salisbury freshman Tyrone Johnson was 10th in the triple jump with an effort of 40 feet, 2 3/4 inches.
Prep hoops
The South Piedmont Conference announced brackets for the tournament that is scheduled to start on Monday.
Girls games are set for Monday with No. 1 seed West Rowan and No. 2 seed Hickory Ridge hosting doubleheaders.
At West, No. 4 Concord plays No. 5 Central Cabarrus at 6 p.m. West plays No. 8 Cox Mill at 7:30 p.m.
At Hickory Ridge, No. 3 Carson plays No. 6 Robinson at 6 p.m. No. 7 East Rowan plays Hickory Ridge at 7:30 p.m.

The boys first round is scheduled to start on Tuesday, with No. 1 seed Robinson and No. 2 seed Concord hosting doubleheaders.
At Robinson, No. 5 Carson plays No. 4 Hickory Ridge at 6 p.m., while No. 8 West Rowan plays Robinson at 7:30 p.m.
At Concord, No. 6 Central Cabarrus plays No. 3 Cox Mill at 6 p.m., while No. 7 Northwest Cabarrus plays Concord at 7:30 p.m.
Cox Mill is hosting the semifinals and championship game. Girls semifinals are Wednesday, while boys semifinals are Thursday. Championship games will be played on Friday.

The CCC tournament is scheduled to start Monday.
In a first-round girls game, No. 5 Lexington plays at No. 4 Thomasville at 6 p.m. That game will be followed by the No. 6 East Davidson at No. 3 Thomasville boys game.
The third-seeded Salisbury girls will play Monday at home against No. 6 West Davidson.
In a 7 p.m. game on Monday, the No. 4 Lexington boys host No. 5 West Davidson. Tuesday is being left open as a weather makeup day.
Lexington is the host for the semifinals and championship games. On Wednesday, East Davidson’s top-seeded girls will play the Lexington-Thomasville winner at 6 p.m. in a semifinal. North Rowan’s top-seeded boys will follow in a semifinal against the Lexington-West Davidson winner.
On Thursday, North Rowan’s second-seeded girls will play the Salisbury-West Davidson winner in a semifinal at 6 p.m.
That game will be followed by a boys semifinal between No. 2 Salisbury and the Thomasville-East Davidson winner. Championship games are set for Friday, with the girls game starting at 6 p.m.
College swimming
Queens sophomore McKenzie Stevens (Salisbury) won three individual titles in the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Swimming Championships. She also swam on a winning 800 freestyle relay team that set records (7:12.96).
Local golf
James White made a hole-in-one at Irish Creek.
White aced the 18th hole with a 4-hybrid. Witnesses were Doug Brothers, David Howell and Greg Chappell. It was the eighth career hole-in-one for White.
Spencer Cal Ripken
Spencer Cal Ripken baseball and softball will be holding registration for the following divisions:
Tee-Ball $50, Coach Pitch, Minors and Majors Baseball $60, Softball $60.
