Catawba athletics: Baseball splits; basketball teams fall on road

Catawba’s baseball team put together a seven-run third inning and won 7-1 at Florida Tech on Saturday afternoon.
Will Albertson had three hits and three RBIs for the Indians. Malachi Hanes had two hits.
Shaefer Shepard pitched into the sixth, struck out eight and earned the win. Connor Johnson struck out four, got the last 10 outs and earned a save.

Catawba (2-3) lost to Valdosta State 2-1 later on Saturday. Russ Weiker took the loss despite pitching seven strong innings. Albertson had two hits, while Kyle Smith had a run-scoring double.
Catawba women
Catawba’s women’s basketball team continued its strong play on Saturday, but the Indians fell on the road to first-place Anderson, 89-84.
Catawba shot well — 8-for-16 on 3-pointers and 22-for-25 on free throws — but the Indians couldn’t overcome foul trouble (Anderson shot 35 free throws) and 21 turnovers.
Bri Johnson scored 24 to lead the Indians. Terri Rogers had 17 points, and Emma Ucinski scored 12.
Nakia Young led the Trojans with 26 points.

Catawba’s men’s basketball team lost at Anderson, 74-72, on Saturday afternoon.
Maurice Howard sank two free throws with three seconds remaining to give Anderson the win,
Catawba’s Rakeen Brown got off a shot at the end, but it was off the mark.
Jerrin Morrison led the Indians with 18 points. Jameel Taylor scored 13, and Ben Sealey and Jeremy McLaughlin scored nine apiece.
Randall Shaw scored 21 for the Trojans.
Catawba was hurt by 9-for-18 free-throw shooting and was outrebounded 45-26.
Catawba’s bus broke down in Anderson, making a bad day worse. Catawba returns to Goodman Gym on Wednesday, hosting seventh-ranked Queens.
