History Club to learn about Dolley Madison

Published 9:35 am Friday, March 4, 2016

The Rowan History Club will meet Tuesday, March 8, at 7 p.m.  The program will be presented by Carol Ghiorsi Hart. Her program is on Dolley Madison’s Red Dress.

Hart is the director of the Greensboro Historical Museum, and has been in North Carolina for four years. She is from Long Island, N.Y., and most recently was the executive director of the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium. Previously, she was the executive director of the Smithtown Historical Society. She has a master’s degree in sociocultural anthropology from Indiana University, and has been a curator, educator and adjunct professor.

Hart’s museum work took her to Japan and Germany (researching planetarium projectors); in an ambulance with a 3,000-year- old mummy (to get a CT scan and X-rays); through the fields chasing sheep (Smithtown had a historic farm with poor fences); and atop 16-foot ladders painting murals (for Vanderbilt’s historic marine museum).

Since coming to Greensboro, she has had even more exiting adventures including meeting documentary film maker Ken Burns, who came to the museum to see the Civil War collections; a trip to the Smithsonian Institution as a courier for Dolley Madison’s scarlet dress for a new exhibit; and autographing first-day envelopes, books and programs following the national unveiling ceremony of the new O.Henry Forever stamp held at the Greensboro Historical Museum.

In the past year, Hart was executive producer of a 30-minute documentary about the Greensboro Montagnard community that was aired nationally on PBS stations; her name is now listed on IMBD. She also was featured in the Travel Channel’s show, “Mysteries at the Museum” this past month telling the story of Dolley Madison’s red dress.

The meeting will be held in the Messinger Room (accessible by elevator).  Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month, Septtember-June. The museum is at 202 N. Main St. Guests to the program should enter through the rear entrance.

A roundtable format will allow for a 30-45-minute presentation, followed by a question and answer period.  The Rowan History Club is open to all persons interested in the history of Rowan County. There are no dues or admission fees, and refreshments are served.
