Area Sports Briefs: Catawba softball splits

— Catawba and host Young Harris split a softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Rivers Field.
Catawba lost the opener 3-1 but came for a 3-2, eight-inning victory.
In the second game, Catawba (13-6) took the lead in the eighth on a sac fly by Delane Smith. Carley Tysinger (8-3) got a fly out and two ground outs to secure the 3-2 win.
Tysinger doubled home a run in the second inning and scored on a two-out double by Ashley Wagoner.
Smith homered for Catawba’s only run in the opener. Smith, Kristen Stinnard and Katherine Shumaker had two hits each. Tysinger struck out 12 but took the loss.
Catawba hosts UNC Pembroke in a rescheduled game on Monday. The doubleheader starts at 1 pm.

Prep baseball
West Rowan lost 9-5 at Mooresville on Saturday in a non-conference game.
West led 5-2 early, but Mooresville scored five runs in the third.
Lee Poteat had two RBIs for the Falcons (2-1).
Brett Graham struck out four for West.
Eric Jackson drove in two runs for the Blue Devils (2-2).

TROUTMAN — Davie County blanked South Iredell, 1-0, Saturday afternoon, behind the three-hit pitching of Tyler Roberts and Jalen Scott.
The War Eagles (2-1) managed just three hits as well, and scored the game’s only run in the third inning when Caleb Wallace was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Beau Byerly trotted home from third base.
Ryan Mitschele was the tough-luck losing pitcher for South Iredell (0-2).

Prep hoops
East Davidson’s girls advanced to the 2A state championship game by beating R-S Central 49-43 in Saturday’s West Regional final.
Catawba recruit Madi Hallman led the Golden Eagles with 20 points. Bayley Plummer had 13 points and 24 rebounds.

Robinson (28-3) won 67-66 in overtime against Hickory (29-3) in the 3A boys West Regional final on Saturday.
Lavar Batts Jr. and Daniel Spencer scored 24 points each. Jordan McKenzie added 11.
Javonte Misenheimer scored the game-winning bucket for the Bulldogs.
