Area Sports Briefs: West, Salisbury win soccer matches

Lejla Mehmedovic scored three goals as West Rowan’s girls soccer team beat North Rowan 9-0 on Wednesday.
Victoria Patterson and Rustyn Orbison scored two goals each. Stacey Ketchie and Emily Muire had a goal apiece.

Salisbury won 4-0 at Mount Pleasant in a non-conference game.North Stanly’s
Katie Bullock scored three goals for the Hornets and also had an assist.
Julia Honeycutt had a goal and an assist. Emily Mann had an assist. Juliana Anderson secured her third consecutive shutout in goal. Salisbury got excellent play from Kathryn Rusher, Nellie Brown, Amelia Steinman and Kayla Honeycutt.
Salisbury hosts A.L. Brown tonight at 5:30 p.m.

Prep baseball
Jacob Tuttle pitched a shutout as A.L. Brown beat Robinson 10-0 in a non-conference game on Wednesday.

In Carson’s 9-5 win against Robinson on Tuesday, Brandon Newton earned a save, and Michael Morrison had two hits.

West Rowan will host Salisbury tonight at 6 p.m.

Prep golf
East Rowan shot 138 and won Wednesday’s SPC golf match at McCanless.
Logan Shuping shot 31 to lead the Mustangs. Nick Lyerly shot 32, Ben Rollins shot 37, and Bryson Sprinkle shot 38.
Hickory Ridge finished 11 shots back at 149. Concord shot 156 for third.
Concord’s Walker Cress shot 32, and Stephen Carroll shot 35.
Hickory Ridge’s Brody Davis shot 33, while Mack Shepherd shot 34.
Leading South Rowan were Parker Chavis (40) and Andrew Hubbard (42).
Joseph Mitchem and Zain Tucker shot 41s for Carson. Bobby Bauer shot 42, and Tristan McDaniel shot 44.

Prep softball
West Rowan lost to Mooresville 10-0 in five innings on Wednesday.
Ashley Davis struck out 11. Kepli Meadows had three hits.
Taylor Martin had the only hit for the Falcons (3-1). Peyton Greene struck out six.

Prep tennis
Salisbury’s boys won 7-2 against Albemarle in non-conference action on Wednesday.
Singles winners for the Hornets are Spencer Storey, David Derrick, Matt Sukkasem, Roarke Burton and William McGee.
The doubles teams of Hunter Carlton/Sukkasem and Burton/Adam Drye were winners.
Salisbury (3-0) will play South Rowan today at 4:30 p.m.

Prep track
West Rowan sprinter J.T. Sanders will compete in the New Balance Nationals indoor track meet in New York this weekend.

Prep basketball
Players making the All-Uwharrie Conference boys basketball team included North Stanly’s Bryson Childress, PT Childress, Stephen Misenheimer and Luke Gibson; Gray Stone’s Frankie Rivell, and Albemarle’s Cameron Lee and Josh Willis.
North Stanly’s Chris Misenheimer was named coach of the year, while North Stanly’s Stephen Misenheimer was named player of the year.

The All-Uwharrie Conference girls basketball team includes Gray Stone’s Shannon Efird, Kate Sullivan, Annie Habeeb and Megan Frick; North Stanly’s Aaliyah Scott and Weslyn Almond and Albemarle’s Kyleigh McLendon, Nigeria Smith and Taya Joseph.
Gray Stone’s Robert Stack was named coach of the year, while Albemarle’s McLendon was the player of the year.

College basketball
Former Cox Mill star Matt Morgan, a freshman at Cornell, was named to the All-Ivy League second team.
Morgan averages 18.9 points per game.

College softball
Catawba split with Barton on Wednesday, winning 6-0 and losing 7-2.
Carley Tysinger pitched a shutout and struck out 10 in the opener. Delane Smith and Kristen Stinnard had two RBIs each.
Katherine Shumaker homered for the Indians in the second game.

Middle school golf
Salisbury Academy defeated Sacred Heart, 159-195, at Country Club of Salisbury.
Pacing the Jaguars in their first match of the season was medalist Charlie Barr with 36.
He was followed by Mitch Jeter (39), Will Fowler (41), Hank Robins (43), Walker Hartpence (46) and Marshall Overcash (46).

Parks and Rec
Salisbury Parks and Recreation will hold a coaches meeting this evening for teams interested in the spring Men’s Open Softball League. The meeting is at 6 p.m. at Hall Gym at 1400-B West Bank St. For more information, call 704-638-5289.
